Flossmoor School District 161 Board of Education Learning and Instruction Committee will meet at 5 p.m. Monday, Nov. 18, in Normandy Villa, 41 E. Elmwood Drive, Chicago Heights. The agenda is available here.

Highlights: Discussion topics include long-term math initiatives and standards-based grading.

Highlights: The board will consider change orders to two summer street projects and amendments to village codes. Also on the agenda: salary schedules for 2024-25 and contracts with the GIS consortium and Cook County Department of Health.

Thornton Township Board of Trustees will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 19, in township hall,
333 E. 162nd St., South Holland. The agenda is available here.

Highlights: The board will consider approving the 2024-25 budgets for the general fund and general assistance fund, a tax refund for property owners in the township, bonuses for township employees and an appointment to fill the trustee position vacated when Jerry Jones resigned. 

Homewood School District 153 Board of Education Finance and Property Committee will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 19, in the district office conference room, 18205 Aberdeen St. The agenda is available here.

Homewood-Flossmoor District 233 Board of Education will meet Tuesday, Nov 19, at 7 p.m. in The Viking Room, South Building, 999 Kedzie Ave. The agenda is available here.

Highlights: Student recognitions will include the state champion unified soccer team and National Merit Commended Students and a semi-finalist. The board will consider a resolution establishing the estimated tax levy, authorizing the administration to apply for a property tax relief grant and six measures related to insurance renewals.

Homewood-Flossmoor Park District Board of Commissioners will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 19, in the Goldberg Administration Center, 3301 Flossmoor Road. The agenda is available here.

Highlights: The board will consider setting winter recreation and Coyote Run Golf Course fees.

Flossmoor Green Commission will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 19, in village hall, 2800 Flossmoor Road. The agenda is available here.

Homewood Public Library Board of Trustees will meet at 6:45 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 20, in the library, 17917 Dixie Highway. The agenda will be posted here.

Highlights: The board will hold a public hearing on the property tax levy ordinance followed by the regular board meeting.

Monday, Nov. 18

Oreo Taste Test. Flossmoor Public Library, 1000 Sterling Ave., invites kids and tweens to an Oreo Taste Test Challenge at 6 p.m. Participants will sample a variety of Oreo cookies and try to guess the flavors. Register at www.FlossmoorLibrary.org.

Tuesday, Nov. 19

Fragments of Flossmoor Discussion x 2. Author and Flossmoor Veterans’ Memorial Secretary-Treasurer Kris Condon will be available to discuss her book, “Fragments of Flossmoor: A Series of Essays on the Interesting, Curious and Unique in Our Village,” at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the Flossmoor Public Library, 1000 Sterling Ave. Copies of the book will be available for purchase, with 100% of sales benefiting the Flossmoor Veterans Memorial Wall of Honor project. Registration is not required.

Special Tribute Homewood Stories. Homewood Stories will host a special tribute event at FCC Community House, 847 Hutchinson Road in Flossmoor, to the honor the series founder, the late Karen O’Donnell. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., event starts at 7:30 p.m. Free. No RSVP necessary.

Thursday, Nov. 21

Gun Lock Giveaway and Safety Discussion. South Suburban College Criminal Justice Program, in partnership with the Cook County Sheriff’s Office and the Department of Veterans Affairs, is hosting a Gun Lock Giveaway and Safety Discussion on Thursday, Nov. 21, from 10 a.m. to noon in the Performing Arts Center at SSC’s Main Campus, located at 15800 S. State St., South Holland.

Beginner Bonsai Workshop. Thornton Distilling, 400 E. Margaret St., Thornton, will host a workshop at 6 p.m. Tickets include a distillery tour, tasting and beginner bonsai workshop. Click here to buy tickets.

Karaoke at the Q. Twisted Q BBQ, 2053 Ridge Road in Homewood, will host karaoke from 8 to 11 p.m.

Saturday, Nov. 23

Ruth Page’s Nutcracker. Tchaikovsky’s holiday favorite, “The Nutcracker,” will be performed from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23, at the Governors State University Center for Performing Arts, 1 University Parkway, University Park. “This beloved holiday family classic is the only production that recreates the original version’s full-length staging. International guest artists will perform alongside the Ruth Page Civic Ballet elite dancers.” Tickets available here.

Jazz Night. Bistro on Sterling, 1040 Sterling Ave. in Flossmoor, will host live jazz music starting at 7 p.m.

Sunday, Nov. 24

Butterball Burner 5K. The H-F Park District’s 20th annual Thanksgiving 5K run will start at 8 a.m. at the H-F Racquet & Fitness Club, 2920 W. 183rd St. in Homewood. “Burn some extra calories before your big Thanksgiving meal and enjoy a fun-filled run/walk.” All ages and abilities welcome. Early bird registration deadline for the $30 fee is Nov. 19. After that, registration will be $35. Click here to register.

Community Thanksgiving Gathering. All Nations Community Church, 18620 Kedzie Ave., will host the 52nd annual H-F Community Thanksgiving Gathering at 7 p.m., featuring the H-F High School Viking Choir and diverse voices from the community. The event will help raise money for Respond Now. This year’s theme is centered around Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s vision of a society built on inclusion, where love and understanding are the guiding forces. All are welcome regardless of beliefs or practices.

Holiday Yard Cards. H-F Park District is hosting holiday yard card workshops from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays through Dec. 12. Click here to register. Once registration is complete, participants need to email an electronic copy of their holiday card to [email protected] or bring their chosen card to the Irwin Center and provide an email address for communication. Learn to Curl. The H-F Ice Arena will host a two-session class on curling that will meet from 6:45 to 8:45 p.m. Monday, Dec. 9, and Monday, Dec. 16. The class is designed for beginners and those looking to refine their skills. For ages 15 and up. The fee is $65 for H-F Park District residents, $75 for non-residents. Click here to register.

Celebrate the Season. Flossmoor kicks off the holiday season with its annual holiday festival downtown and in Flossmoor Park from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 30. 

Small Business Saturday Popup Shop. Music, food, venue tours and a variety of vendors at 1820 Ridge Road in Homewood from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 30.

Casey McDonough, Dag Juhlin at Izaak Walton. Homewood Arts Council will sponsor a concert from 7 to 10 p.m. on Nov. 30 with hometown favorite Casey McDonough, Dennis J. Leise Music and special guest Dag Juhlin. Get tickets here.
