The Village of Flossmoor at its June 1 meeting honored longtime resident, historian and veteran Richard “Dick” Condon proclaiming June 3 as “Richard W. Condon Day” in recognition of his 95th birthday and decades of service to the community.
According to the proclamation, Condon’s ties to Flossmoor date back to childhood. He moved to Flossmoor Park in 1932 and later lived in Apartment 309 of the Civic Center Building. He attended Flossmoor School, later known as Leavitt Avenue School, from kindergarten through eighth grade.

The proclamation also recognized Condon’s service in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and his distinguished career as a design engineer, during which he earned 22 patents.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Condon has left a visible mark on the community through his woodcarving. During the meeting, Nelson pointed to a wood carving displayed in the Village Hall boardroom that was created by Condon.
Village officials also recognized Condon’s role in local historical preservation. He volunteered with the Homewood Historical Society for nearly two decades and helped organize and preserve historical collections.
The proclamation further noted his involvement with the Flossmoor Veterans Wall of Honor project, serving as both an inspiration and technical expert.
“Throughout his 95 years, Mr. Condon has exemplified resilience, wisdom and unwavering devotion to family, community and service,” the proclamation states.
The village’s designation of June 3 as Richard W. Condon Day encourages residents to celebrate his lifetime of service, craftsmanship and commitment to the community.

Kris Condon, Condon’s daughter, attended the presentation and was recognized for her leadership in fundraising and planning efforts for the Flossmoor Veterans Memorial. Mayor Michelle Nelson said the project has raised nearly $200,000 and is expected to begin construction soon.
Nelson praised Kris Condon for helping bring the memorial project to fruition and noted that her father has served as vice president of the Flossmoor Veterans Memorial organization.
