George M. Woolsey passed away on Oct. 13, 2024 at the age of 84. He served as Catalog Assistant at A.C. Buehler Library of Elmhurst University for 30 years, and previously as Catalog Librarian at Harvey Public Library for 13 years. He was born in Albany, New York and received undergraduate degrees from Trinity College in Hartford Connecticut in 1962 and the Rhode Island School of Design in 1965. He received an MFA from Cornell University in 1968 and a Master’s degree in Library Science from the University of Illinois in 1982.
George’s interests were varied and included fossil collecting, art, and music. He was a member of the Dry Dredgers, a fossil hunting group, and sang in the South Suburban Master Chorale. He was also a longtime member of Faith Lutheran Church in Homewood, where he applied his musical talents as a choir member and cantor. His musical interests were varied, ranging from Renaissance polyphony to Latin jazz. His background in studio art led him to frequent visits to the Chicago Art Institute where his family would benefit from his expertise and knowledge of art.
George is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Mary, his two sons, John and Benjamin (Stephanie), one grandson, Ezra, a sister, Abigail Rowley of Swarthmore, PA, and one brother, Timothy Woolsey of Austin, TX.
A celebration of life will be held on December 7th at Faith Lutheran Church in Homewood, IL at 10:00 AM.
