Flossmoor Streetscape Project Update. According to the weekly village update, D Construction finished the curb and sidewalk removal on the west sides of Park Drive and Sterling Avenue, on both sides of Central Drive and on the north side of Flossmoor Road. Workers also completed the installation of the new curb in the same locations. Village officials caution visitors downtown to be cautious because sidewalk and pavement areas are uneven.

In the coming week, new planters and sidewalks will be completed in the same areas noted above.

Monday, Aug. 11

A Guide to Hip and Knee Replacements. Dr. Jamil Kendall will discuss hip and knee replacements from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway. This program is part of a partnership with Advocate Aurora Health. Register here.

Trail Hounds. The dog walking group will meet at 7 p.m. in Indian Trails Park, Willow and Riegel Roads in Homewood. The on-leash walk is free and open to any size and breed of friendly dog.

Tuesday, Aug. 12

Storytime in the Park. Flossmoor Public Library will host storytime from 10:30 to 11 a.m. in Leavitt Park, 1010 Leavitt Ave. Register here.

Park Storytime. Homewood Public Library will host storytime from 10:30 to 11 a.m. in Orchard Park, 1655 Olive Road.

Homewood Stories. Storytellers at Flossmoor Community Church Community House, 947 Hutchison Road, will include Victoria Reeves, Wayne Lerner, Susan Rohde, Clarence Sonny Hogan and host Paul Teodo. NAACP Far South Side Branch. The local NCAAP branch will host a general membership meeting from noon to 1 p.m. followed by a meet and greet from 1 to 3 p.m. at Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway. Voter registration will be available. Refreshments will be served.

Homewood Outdoor Farmers Market. The market will be open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Martin Square on Martin Avenue between Chestnut and Ridge Roads in downtown Homewood. Vendors will offer fresh produce, baked goods, handcrafted jewelry, skincare and more. Food trucks will be on hand and ready-to-eat meals will be available. Liz Smith of Serendipity Yoga will offer a free kids’ yoga session from 11 to 11:45 a.m. Children of all ages are welcome, but the experience is best suited for those who can follow simple directions and enjoy imaginative play. No mats are needed. All necessary materials will be provided.

STEM Saturday. Science play and learning from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Homewood Science Center, 18022 Dixie Highway.

Barb & Dan’s Road Ride. Riders of all experience levels can join the group which leaves at 8 a.m. from GoodSpeed Cycles, 2125 183rd St. in Homewood. There is a no-drop group that rides about 20 miles and stronger riders sometimes go farther. Helmets required, daytime lights strongly recommended.

Off-leash Ride. A leisurely just-riding-around nine-mile ride every Saturday. Route includes Butterfield Creek bike path, Rovers Run and Izaak Walton Preserve. Starts at GoodSpeed Cycles, 2125 183rd St., at 8:30 a.m. sharp, ends back at the shop 9:45ish for donuts.

Clothing Swap. Gaia’s Market & Refillery will host a free clothing swap event from noon to 4 p.m. Bring clothing for all ages, sizes and styles (as long as they are in wearable condition) and  go home with something new.

Mum, Shrub Sale. Irons Oaks Foundation is taking orders starting Monday, Aug. 18, through Monday, Sept. 15, for its annual sale of mums and fall bushes and shrubs. Plant pick-up will be  at the Irons Oaks Environmental Learning Center, 20000 Western Ave. on Sept. 23.

Friday, Aug. 22

Trail Mix: Hackensaw Boys. Trail Mix Productions will present its next Roots Music Series concert, Hackensaw Boys with opener Brice Clark, at Izaak Walton Preserve, 1100 Ridge Road in Homewood. Tickets are available here.

Saturday, Aug. 23

Back-to-School Party. Homewood School District 153 and the Village of Homewood will host a back to school event from 3 to 6 p.m. at village hall, 2020 Chestnut Road. There will be big trucks, a DJ spinning kid friendly music, interactive games for all-ages, a rock climbing wall, bubbles, balloons, face painting, community resources and more. Food trucks will be available.

Friday, Aug. 29

District 161 Back-To-School Bash. Head to Flossmoor Park from 4 to 6 p.m. for a back to school celebration. Connect with local resources that support students and community. Kids and adults alike will enjoy treats from Kona Ice and Dip ‘n Double, while exploring a variety of tables hosted by local organizations. Community partners such as Partnership for Resilience, Elevate Therapy, and the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) will be on hand to share information and answer questions. One of the highlights of the event is the return of the popular Spirit Wear Swap. The Flossmoor Library and Flossmoor Green Commission have partnered once again to collect gently used District 161 spirit wear. The Bash is sponsored by the Village of Flossmoor, the Flossmoor Public Library and Flossmoor School District 161.

Friday, Sept. 5

Pups at the Pad. From 5 to 7 p.m. dogs and their people can enjoy the cool water at the H-F Park District Splash Pad, Millennium Park, 18600 Harwood Ave. in Homewood. This off-leash event is the perfect opportunity for dogs to socialize, play, and beat the heat.

Thursday, Sept. 11

Books Without Borders. The first session of the Books Without Borders community book club will meet from 6:45 to 8 p.m. at The Rock Shop, 18109 Dixie Highway, to discuss “So You Want to Talk about Race” by Ijeoma Oluo.

Thursday, Sept. 25

Legislative Write-In. The League of Women Voters Homewood Flossmoor Area will host an opportunity from 5:30 to 8 p.m. for food, fellowship, fun, reuniting, recruiting and writing letters to legislators about important issues.
