Flossmoor Streetscape Project Update. Crews began storm sewer construction last week. The mailbox formerly located on the west side of the traffic circle was moved to a spot nearby on Central Drive. Next week, sidewalk removal will continue, plus curbs and sidewalks will begin to be replaced, starting in front of the U.S. Post Office. Homer Trees will also be on site to remove remaining tree stumps and root pruning. Downtown businesses remain open during construction. Free parking is available in the north and south commuter lots.

Christmas in July Toy Drive. The Flossmoor Community Relations Commission toy drop off continues through July 31. Donation boxes are available in Flossmoor Village Hall, 2800 Flossmoor Road, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Toys will be shared with Faithful Meals in Motion, a non-profit organization that serves many school-aged children during the holiday season. Preferred toys include baby dolls with accessories, karaoke machines, art kits sets for ages 8 and up, kitchen sets, scooters and bikes (20 or 24 inches), big plush toys, Easy Bake ovens, dinosaur toys, Transformers and monster truck toys, Marvel action figures, Hot Wheel sets with tracks, Sonic toys, remote-control cars and trucks and soccer balls and volleyballs. Salem Lutheran Vacation Bible School. The theme this year is “The Wild West!” Kids will play games, make crafts, hear Bible stories, have snacks and there will be music and fun from 6 to 8 p.m. each day from July 21 to 24. July 21 through Aug. 1

Hobo Jungle. Monday through Friday 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. in Flossmoor Park. For kids aged 7 through 13. Learn how to use basic carpentry tools while building full-size themed structures. Safety is stressed and reinforced. Campers will spend part of their day in the construction area and the rest playing organized games. The construction area is located under a nut tree. Campers get a themed T-shirt, make a visit to Millennium Park Splash Pad and there will be a parent night. Fee is $159 for H-F Park District residents, $189 for non-residents. Click here to register.

Adolescent Activists. Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway, will host an opportunity for teens in grades seven through 12 to share their opinions and views on real world issues and events. The event will be held in the FORT, the teen space upstairs. The topic will cultural appropriation. Snacks will be served. Click here to register.

Choo-Choo Ride. GoodSpeed Cycle’s slow roll just riding around bike ride for all ages. Meet at the shop, 2125 W. 183rd St., at 6:30 p.m. The ride is about four miles at a leisurely pace. The ride ends at the shop around 7:30 p.m. with Dilly Bars and beers for riders. Helmets required.

Bubble-ology. Irons Oaks Environmental Learning Center, 20000 Western Ave., will host from 4 to 5 p.m. a chance to experience the joy of soapy magic. A non-paying adult must accompany the child. Chamber Night. The fifth annual Chamber Night will bring the music and family fun to a new location, Flossmoor Commons, starting at 5 p.m. There will be food, local business vendors and more great music, headlined by an Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra ensemble playing showtunes. Bel Canto Community Choir will open, and this year there will be an after party featuring Return 2 Soul with Keya Trammell. This is a free event.

Groovin’ at GovState. Projecto 7 will perform a fusion of salsa dura, salsa romantica, merengue, bachata and cumbia music starting at 6 p.m. at Governors State University, 1 University Parkway, University Park. There will be free parking in West Lot 1 and East Lot 1. Food trucks including Taqueria Jose Carnitas will be available.

Teen Movie Club. Double feature at Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway, from 5 to 8:45 p.mn. “Mamma Mia”(PG-13, 108 minutes) will be followed by “Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again” (PG-13, 114 minutes). Snacks will be provided. Registration is required.

Saturday, July 26

Feast of the Goat Queen. From noon to 11 p.m. Rabid Brewing will host its annual festival at 17759 Bretz Drive in Homewood. There will be food, music, fae costumes, artisan market, live music and baby goats.

Homewood Outdoor Farmers Market. The market will be open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Martin Square on Martin Avenue between Chestnut and Ridge roads in downtown Homewood. Vendors will offer fresh produce, baked goods, handcrafted jewelry, skincare and more. Food trucks will be on hand and ready-to-eat meals will be available.

STEM Saturday. Science play and learning from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Homewood Science Center, 18022 Dixie Highway.

Flossmoor native gives IPO benefit concert: “Dialogues In Sound: Music for Violin & Viola Duo,” a concert featuring Homewood-Flossmoor High School alumna violist Katelyn Hoag, and her husband, Bram Margoles, will be given at 3 p.m. at Flossmoor Community Church, 2218 Hutchison Road. The fundraising concert for the Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra will feature works by Mozart, Augusta Read Thomas, Scott Joplin and others. Tickets are $30 and are available at IPOmusic.org or by calling the IPO box office at 708-481-7774.

Barb & Dan’s Road Ride. Riders of all experience levels can join the group which leaves at 8 a.m. from GoodSpeed Cycles, 2125 183rd St. in Homewood. There is a no-drop group that rides about 20 miles and stronger riders sometimes go farther. Helmets required, daytime lights strongly recommended.

Off-leash Ride. A leisurely just-riding-around nine-mile ride every Saturday. Route includes Butterfield Creek bike path, Rovers Run and Izaak Walton Preserve. Starts at GoodSpeed Cycles, 2125 183rd St., at 8:30 a.m. sharp, ends back at the shop 9:45ish for donuts.

July 28 through Aug. 1

Teen Camp. Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., this camp will include field trips to Sea Lions Aquatics, Thunderbolts Baseball and PGN Fun Village. The camp is designed for all the teens and also includes pool days games, sports and other activities. Entering Grades 6 through 8. Weekly fee is $209 for H-F Park District residents and $244 for non-residents. Click here to register.

Stomping Grounds Day Camp. Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., this camp will include a field trip to Medieval Times. The camp is designed for kids in kindergarten through fifth grade. Animal Encounters: Reptiles. From 11 a.m. to noon at Irons Oaks Environmental Learning Center, 20000 Western Ave., will be an opportunity to get up close and personal with reptiles big and small from Dave DiNaso’s Traveling World of Reptiles. Martin Square Block Party. The party from 6 to 10 p.m. on Martin Avenue between Ridge and Chestnut Roads will include music, food and community vibes. DJ Nate Olson from All Sing Karaoke will be spinning songs.

Saturday, Aug. 2

School Supplies Drive. A back-to-school supplies drive will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. at St. John Neumann Church, 17951 Dixie Highway in Homewood. Donations can be placed in bags or boxes of a car trunk for the drive-thru collection. Requested supplies include: clear backpacks, 24-pack crayons, colored markers, colored pencils, blue and black ink pens, spiral notebooks, three-ring binders, two-pocket folders, highlighters, post-it notes, notebook/looseleaf paper, #2 pencils, pencil cases, pencil sharpeners and glue sticks. Donations will be distributed to children served by South Suburban PADS and communities served by St. Vincent DePaul Conference at St. John Neumann. Saturday, Aug. 9

Gobble Doggs Grand Opening. The new turkey hot dog restaurant at 2025 Ridge Road in Homewood will hold its grand opening from noon to 2 p.m. Free samples, music, a scholarship award ceremony and mural unveiling.

Saturday, Aug. 16

NAACP Far South Side Branch. The local NCAAP branch will host a general membership meeting from noon to 1 p.m. followed by a meet and greet from 1 to 3 p.m. at Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway. Voter registration will be available. Refreshments will be served.
