Homewood School District 153 Board of Education will meet at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 16, in the James Hart School media center, 18220 Morgan St. The agenda is available here and here.

Highlights:

  • The board will first convene a public hearing, seating of new board member Christine Scully and election of a board secretary.
  •  In the regular meeting, the board will consider adopting the 2024-25 budget.

Homewood-Flossmoor Park District Board of Commissioners will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17, in the Goldberg Administration Center, 3301 Flossmoor Road. The agenda is available here.

Highlights:

  • Consider a motion to approve the bid from Accu-Paving for $259,650 to build two pickleball courts and one tennis court at Highlands Park.
  • A resolution honoring Nathan Mainor and Susan Walski. 

Homewood-Flossmoor District 233 Board of Education will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17, in the Viking Room, South Building, H-F High School, 999 Kedzie Ave. in Flosssmoor. The agenda is available here.

Highlights:

  •  Consider adopting the 2024-25 budget.
  • Consider changing the weighted grade scale beginning with the 2025-26 school year.
  • Consider changing class rank to using diploma designations (cum laude, magna cum laude, summa cum laude), beginning with the Class of 2028.
  •  Consider ratifying an agreement with the Homewood-Flossmoor Education Organization.
  • Consider entering into a memorandum of agreement with the Homewood-Flossmoor Classified Staff Organization.

Homewood Public Library Board of Trustees will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18, in the library, 17917 Dixie Highway. The agenda will be available here.

Flossmoor Parkway Tree Program. Monday, Sept. 16, is the deadline for participating in the Parkway Tree Program. The village provides trees at no charge to residents. “The Village Forestry Maintenance Technician must approve tree species and locations. Approved applications will be put on the village tree planting list and planted on a first-come, first-serve basis.” For more information, call Flossmoor Public Works at 708-957-4100.

Thursday, Sept. 19

Mariachi Tradicional Juvenil. Flossmoor will host the mariachi group to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month from 6 to 7 p.m. at Flossmoor Public Library, 1000 Sterling Ave.

Karaoke at the Q. Twisted Q BBQ, 2053 Ridge Road, will host karaoke from 8 to 11 p.m.

Friday, Sept. 20

League of Women Voters Mis/Disinformation Program. From 5:30 to 8 p.m. the local League of Women Voters chapter will host Barb Laimins of the LWV Illinois Mis/Disinformation Task Force at Irwin Community Center, 18120 Highland Ave. in Homewood. Laimins “will share information on how to identify and combat election misinformation and disinformation.” Cost is $25 per person. Refreshments will be served. The Chronicle’s Eric Crump will be on hand to offer perspectives on how local journalists deal with misinformation.

Community Bonfire. Homewood-Flossmoor Park District will host a bonfire from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Flossmoor Park, Brassie Avenue and Flossmoor Road.

Red & White Community Day. 
Members of the community are invited to help Homewood-Flossmoor High School celebrate homecoming week “by wearing and decorating with red and white … the day of the Viking Football Homecoming game vs. Neuqua Valley.”

Saturday, Sept. 21

Recyclepalooza. From 9 a.m. to noon, Flossmoor will host the annual recycling event in the parking lot at Parker Junior High. The event provides an opportunity to shed difficult to recycle items like televisions, paint and more.

Homewood Fall Fest. The annual fall celebration and Chili Cook-Off will take place on Martin Avenue in downtown Homewood from noon to 9 p.m. Proceeds from the chili tasting will benefit Homewood PTA. The event will include a pumpkin patch for kids, live music, food and activities.

Zamboni Birthday Party. From 4:15 to 5:45 p.m. at the Homewood-Flossmoor Ice Arena, 777 Kedzie Ave., there will be open skating, free mini skating lessons, prizes, giveaways and free birthday cake for the first 100 guests. There will also be a zamboni naming contest.

Community Shred Day. State Rep. Will Davis will host a community shredding event from 9 a.m. to noon at his office, 1912 W. 174th St., East Hazel Crest. Residents only. Electronics and prescription drugs will also be accepted.

Homewood Farmers Market. Fresh produce, artisan foods, handcrafted personal care item vendors plus live music will all be available on Martin Square between Ridge Road and Chestnut Road from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. 

Barb and Dan’s Road Ride. Weekly bike ride starts at 8 a.m. Saturday from GoodSpeed Cycle, 2125 W. 183rd St. in Homewood. There are two groups. One is a no-one-gets-dropped group that follows a 20-mile route. Another group goes on a longer ride. Helmets required. Lights encouraged. Riders of all experience levels are welcome. 

Off-Leash Bike Ride. A nine-mile ride every Saturday starting at 8:30 a.m. at GoodSpeed Cycle, 2125 W. 183rd St. in Homewood. The route includes Butterfield Creek bike path, past Rover’s Run and through Izaak Walton Preserve. No registration. Donuts upon return.

STEM Saturdays. The Homewood Science Center, 18022 Dixie Highway, is open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. for science play.
