The Village of Flossmoor will launch a new event, OAKtoberfest, on Saturday, Sept. 28, as part of its centennial celebration. The event will include a full day of celebrating nature, trees and community spirit with activities for all ages.
From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Flossmoor Park at Brassie Avenue and Flossmoor Road, festival goers will have opportunities to explore nature along a guided walk, learning about the local ecosystem’s diverse tree canopy and native flowers.
There will be interactive workshops and demonstrations by the Chicago Region Trees Initiative, Possibility Place Nursery, Thorn Creek Audubon Society, the Homewood-Flossmoor Park District and the University of Illinois Extension focusing on sustainable living practices, organic gardening and native plantings.
Children will enjoy nature-themed programming and crafts plus rock climbing, a bubble performer and face painting.
The Homewood Science Center will sponsor a native plant sale and activity, and the Flossmoor Public Library will offer a nature story time for youngsters.
From 4 to 9 p.m. the even will shift to the commuter lot on Sterling Avenue just south of Flossmoor Road for the inaugural OAKtoberfest Music Festival.
DJ Lady Red from 106.3 FM will be followed by live performances from local favorite Butterfield Creek and Chicago-based Ring of Music.
Food and beverages will be available from food trucks and local vendors, such as The Bistro on Sterling, Dunning’s Gourmet Market & Deli and Flossmoor Station Restaurant & Brewery.
“This event will bring you live music that will have you dancing, a cozy bonfire to gather around, refreshing drinks and the chance to taste your way through Flossmoor’s food scene,” Stephanie Wright, Flossmoor’s community engagement manager, said. “OAKtoberfest will be the beginning of a fantastic fall season in Flossmoor.“
