Highlights: The board will consider approving
- The creation of a new position, director of police services, which is expected to be filled by Carl Estelle until he completes credentialing requirements and can be appointed to the position of police chief.
- An intergovernmental agreement with Flossmoor School District 161 for temporary construction and permanent drainage easements to enable the construction of the Heather Hill storm water detention basin.
- A proposal for a new closed-circuit security camera system for village facilities and the downtown area, mostly paid for by a grant received last year.
- An ordinance accepting three easements and a dedication of land in preparation for the Central Business District Roadway, Pedestrian, and Streetscape Improvements Project next year.
Flossmoor School District 161 Board of Education will meet at 8 a.m. Tuesday, July 2, at Normandy Villa, 41 E. Elmwood Drive, Chicago Heights. Find the agenda here. The meeting will be streamed live and can be viewed here.
Highlights: The board will consider hiring an assistant principal for Parker Junior High School and approving a contract for asbestos removal at Normandy Villa.

Bremen Township Board of Trustees will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 2, at 15350 S. Oak Park Avenue, Oak Forest. No agenda was posted on the township website as of Sunday morning, June 30.

Wednesday, July 3
Rainbow Cone Grand Opening. The ice cream shop at 19805 Crawford Ave. in Flossmoor, next to Buona Beef, will have a ribbon-cutting at 10:30 a.m. and a grand opening at 11 a.m. The first 50 people in line will receive a free cone.
Stars and Stripes Family Social. The Homewood-Flossmoor Park District hosts a free Stars and Stripes Family Social 6:30 to 9 p.m. at Irwin Park, 18120 Highland Ave. in Homewood featuring music by “Shout Out.” Kids will enjoy inflatables. Food, beverages and alcohol will be available for purchase from vendors; outside alcohol is prohibited.
Hazel Crest Fireworks Pre-Celebration, at dusk. Fireworks at Lake Owen, 3000 W. 170th St. behind the police station.
Thursday, July 4
Homewood parade. Homewood’s annual 4th of July parade kicks off at 10 a.m. from St. John Neumann Church lot, 17951 Dixie Highway, and proceeds to Ridge Road then east to the Izaak Walton Preserve for a picnic.
Izaak Walton Community Picnic. Preserve volunteers provide the facilities and offer food and refreshments for sale (cooked brats, hot dogs, hamburgers, cheeseburgers, corn on the cob, corn pudding, gourmet sandwiches, soft drinks, water etc.) from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. For the third consecutive year, volunteers will conduct games for all ages starting at noon. There will be foot races, sack races, water balloon toss, egg toss and catch contest, a bag toss tournament (limited to 16 teams starting at 11:30 a.m.), volleyball and other games. All participants will receive Dairy Queen gift certificates. All winners will receive prizes.
Flossmoor Bike Parade. The Homewood-Flossmoor Park District will be in the Parker Junior High Parking Lot at 9:15 a.m. to help children add pizzazz to their bikes. The parade sponsored by the Flossmoor Volunteer Fire Department has been a tradition since 1931. The line up will begin at 9:30 a.m. and the parade will follow Flossmoor Road east to downtown Flossmoor at 10 a.m. Enjoy birthday cupcakes, celebrating Flossmoor’s 100th birthday.
Country Club Hills 4th of July Fireworks Show, open at 6 p.m. Refreshments, entertainment and fireworks. Gates open at 6 p.m. at Country Club Hills Theater, 4150 W. 183rd St.
Glenwood Independence Day Parade and Festival, 1 to 5 p.m. Parade starts at 1 p.m. from Glenwood Oaks, 106 Main St., to village hall, 1 Asselborn Way. The festival will last until 5 p.m. behind village hall at 1 N. Rebecca St. and will include a DJ, stepping, games, food trucks and vendors.
Harvey Independence Day Celebration, 3 to 9 p.m. Parade from 3 to 4:20 p.m. going from 155th Street and Wood Street to 155th Street and Broadway. Carnival from 4:30 to 8 p.m. Fireworks begin at 8:30 p.m., both at 15320 Broadway.
Thornton Independence Day Fireworks, 6 p.m. to dusk. Concessions will open at 6 p.m. Fireworks at sundown in Hubbard Park, west of Wolcott School, 200 N. Wolcott St.
Tinley Park Ribfest and Fireworks. Fireworks at 9:30 p.m. There will be an area for people to set up blankets and lawn chairs outside the event, so even those who aren’t planning on attending Ribfest can still enjoy the show. Everyone can click here when the fireworks get started to sync with the music. Live music at 2, 4:30 and 7 p.m. Free admission for Tinley Park residents with proof of residency. Tickets are $15 per person online at eventwizinc.com or at the gate. Admission is free for children age 3 and younger.
Saturday, July 6
Barb and Dan’s Road Ride. Weekly bike ride starts at 8 a.m. Saturday from GoodSpeed Cycle, 2125 W. 183rd St. in Homewood. There are two groups. One is a no-one-gets-dropped group that follows a 20-mile route. Another group goes on a longer ride. Helmets required. Lights encouraged. Riders of all experience levels are welcome.
Off-Leash Bike Ride. A nine-mile ride every Saturday starting at 8:30 a.m. at GoodSpeed Cycle, 2125 W. 183rd St. in Homewood. The route includes Butterfield Creek bike path, past Rover’s Run and through Izaak Walton Preserve. No registration. Donuts upon return.
Homewood Farmers Market. Fresh produce, artisan foods, handcrafted personal care item vendors plus live music will all be available on Martin Square between Ridge Road and Chestnut Road from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
