Independence Day events open month of music, food, fun happenings

Wednesday, July 3

The Homewood-Flossmoor Park District hosts a free Stars and Stripes Family Social 6:30 to 9 p.m. at Irwin Park, 18120 Highland Ave. in Homewood featuring music by “Shout Out.” Kids will enjoy inflatables. Food, beverages and alcohol will be available for purchase from vendors; outside alcohol is prohibited.

In Homewood

Homewood’s annual 4th of July parade kicks off at 10 a.m. from St. John Neumann Church lot, 17951 Dixie Highway, and proceeds down Ridge Road to the Izaak Walton Preserve for a picnic. Preserve volunteers provide the facilities and offer food and refreshments for sale (cooked brats, hot dogs, hamburgers, cheeseburgers, corn on the cob, corn pudding, gourmet sandwiches, soft drinks, water etc.) from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

For the third consecutive year, volunteers will conduct games for all ages starting at noon. There will be foot races, sack races, water balloon toss, egg toss and catch contest, a bag toss tournament (limited to 16 teams starting at 11:30 a.m.), volleyball and other games. All participants will receive Dairy Queen gift certificates. All winners will receive prizes.

In Flossmoor
The Homewood-Flossmoor Park District will be in the Parker Junior High Parking Lot at 9:15 a.m. to help children add pizzazz to their bikes. The parade will line up at 9:30 a.m. and begin its march toward downtown Flossmoor at 10 a.m. Enjoy birthday cupcakes, celebrating Flossmoor’s 100th birthday!

Wednesday, July 10

Come out to hear local musicians perform as the Homewood-Flossmoor Community Band at Irwin Park at 7 p.m.

Friday, July 12

Spotlight Performance Academy’s production of “Matilda Jr.” will open with a performance at 7 p.m. and continue with 2 p.m. performances on July 13 and 14 at Freedom Hall, 410 Lakewood Blvd., Park Forest. Visit bit.ly/SpotlightMatildaJr for tickets.

Saturday, July 13

Chevrolet of Homewood, 18033 Halsted St., will host its 11th annual BBQ for the Troops to raise money for USO starting at 11 a.m. All branches of the military will be present with support from the local businesses, along with a face painting, a bouncy house.

Sunday, July 14

The 12th annual NCJW Southland Community Garden Walk will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. featuring six to eight outstanding gardens in the Chicago Southland. Master gardeners will be on hand.
Advance tickets are $25 and can be purchased at Art4Soul, 18135 Harwood Ave. in Homewood; Ebel’s Ace Hardware in Cherry Creek Plaza in Homewood; and Gypsy Fix, 1056 Sterling Ave. in downtown Flossmoor. Tickets can be purchased for $30 the day of the event at Goldberg Park, 3301 Flossmoor Road in Flossmoor. Ticket holders will receive a detailed map of the gardens with descriptions, plus discounts for local restaurants.

Donations will help NCJW support Aunt Martha’s Health and Wellness and Respond Now.

Wednesday, July 17

The Homewood-Flossmoor Park District celebrates National Hot Dog Day from noon to 2 p.m. at Irwin Park. This annual event celebrates the classic American hot dog cooked by staff and available for $2, with water, soda or chips for $1.

Thursday, July 18

The Homewood Science Center presents its Summer Fest fundraiser from 6 to 10 p.m. at Idlewild Country Club, 19201 Dixie Highway in Flossmoor. Donation is $60 per person and covers two complimentary drinks, a summer favorites buffet, music by DJ QMac, a silent auction, STEM activities for adults, games, a Wine Collection raffle. Tickets purchased after July 4 are $75. Details are at homewoodscience center.org.
“Summer Fest is crucial for our mission to provide equitable access to STEM,” said Edie Dobrez, HSC executive director. “Most of our programs and events are free. The funds raised will ensure we can continue to inspire and educate the next generation of scientists, engineers, and innovators.”

The Marques Carroll Quintet brings jazz sounds to the Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra’s summer series at Olympia Fields Country Club with performances at 6:15 p.m. and 7:45 p.m. Tickets are $40 for adults, $15 for students. Beer, wine and soft drinks will be available for purchase prior to the concert.

Friday, July 19

It’s a Brew and View event at Homewood’s Irwin Park hosted by the Homewood-Flossmoor Park District. The 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. program includes showing of the movie “A Field of Their Own” presented at dusk. Beforehand, food and beverage vendors will be on-site. Local breweries will be featured at this event.

Sunday, July 21

It’s time for Gotts-Chalk the Walk, a program for all ages, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Gottschalk House on Martin Avenue in downtown Homewood. Pastel chalk will help artists young and old create beautiful, unique artwork. Enjoy free cotton candy. A face painter will be available.

Thursday, July 25

Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra’s brass percussion ensemble and the Bel Canto Choir perform starting at 5:45 p.m. for the 4th annual Chamber Night program in downtown Flossmoor organized by the Southland Chamber of Commerce in collaboration with the Flossmoor Business Association. Food will be available for purchase and local businesses will offer goods for sale. Plein-air painters will amaze you with their work, sold via auction at the night’s end. This is a free event; bring a chair to enjoy the concert in front of the Flossmoor library.

Wednesday, July 31

Homewood’s Rock the Block, a Martin Square Block Party, gets underway at 6 p.m. Enjoy food, games and music by a DJ until 10 p.m. on Martin Square, adjacent to Homewood Village Hall at 2020 Chestnut Road in downtown Homewood.
