Flossmoor School District 161 Board of Education will meet at 6 p.m. Monday, April 8, in Normandy Villa, 41 E. Elmwood Drive, Chicago Heights. Find the agenda here. Attend the meeting remotely here.

Highlights: The board is expected to vote on a proposed easement that would allow the Village of Flossmoor to build a storm water detention basin near Heather Hill School. The board also will consider approving a number of summer maintenance projects and an upgrade to the Bluepoint emergency response system

Highlights: A proclamation honoring the H-F boys basketball team for winning the state championship, authorize spending $176,000 to purchase a new radio system for public works, a measure to remove the building at 2018-2020 Ridge Road from the Homewood Science Center lease, an extension to the Letter of Intent with Rabid Ground preliminary to the redevelopment of  3003-3025 183rd St. and discussion of the village’s proposed five-year capital improvement plan

Highlights: The commission will review the completed Downtown Transit-Oriented Development Master Plan, which has been in development over the past year. The commission will also consider a request to resubdivide the former Brunswick Zone/Big Lots property at 3043-3055 183rd St. in preparation for redevelopment.

Stuff to do

Monday, April 8

HPL Eclipse Party. Homewood Public Library will host an eclipse-watching party from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. at 17817 Dixie Highway. The library plans to offer crafts, games and storytimes as well as an opportunity to watch the eclipse.

PSC Eclipse Party. Prairie State College Library, 202 S. Halsted St., Chicago Heights, will host an eclipse viewing event from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in both the Barnes and Noble Conference Center, room 1315, and the Scholar’s Garden. Participants will have an opportunity to make pinhole projectors, eat snacks and hear research by STEM Club students. The Scholar’s Garden will host eclipse viewing with solar telescopes and glasses. Organizers suggest participants bring a blanket or chair.

Tuesday, April 9

Art in the Park. 
The first session will be from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. at Flossmoor Park, 2449 Flossmoor Road. Explore and play at the parks of Homewood and Flossmoor. There will be a different art project each week. Future locations include Millennium Park on April 23, Leavitt Park on May 7 and Goldberg Park on May 21.

Cook Book Club. The club will be a chance to learn about and try new recipes. Meets from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Irwin Community Center, 18120 Highland Ave. in Homewood. Fee is $25 per drop-in session for district residents, $30 per session for non-residents, or $80 for district residents for all sessions, $100 for non-residents. Click here to register.

Wednesday, April 10

Charcuterie and Graze. 
Homewood-Flossmoor Park District will host a workshop on the basics of charcuterie from noon to 2 p.m. at Irwin Community Center, 18120 Highland Ave. in Homewood. Materials will be provided. For ages 55 and up. Fee is $15 for district residents, $20 for non-residents. Click here to register.

Privy Diggers. Homewood Historical Society will host a presentation by Michael and Mario Bovino, self-proclaimed “privy diggers” who will tell the story and facts about their findings, including Victorian-era artifacts. The presentation will be preceded by a short business meeting at 6:45 p.m. in the Homewood Public Library meeting room, 17917 Dixie Highway. 

Thursday, April 11

International Tea: Incredible India. Prairie State College will host an international tea from 12:30 – 2 p.m. in Barnes & Noble College Auditorium, 202 S. Halsted St. The event will include cultural demonstrations, including Indian classical dance and sample Indian cuisine. Guest speakers will be Aparna Palakodeti and Johnson Thomas. Saturday, April 13

Scouts Pancake Breakfast. 
Boy Scout Troop 342 and Cub Scout Pack 304 will host their annual pancake breakfast fundraiser from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Abundant Grace Community Church, 18200 Dixie Highway in Homewood. Tickets are $5 in advance or $7 at the door.

Trailhounds. 
The program sponsored by the Homewood-Flossmoor Park District, invites dog owners to join a free on-lease walk at 9 a.m. at Patriots Park, 187th and Center Avenue in Homewood for a 4/10th a mile walk, or at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 24, at Leavitt Park, 1010 Leavitt Ave. in Flossmoor for a 1/10th of a mile walk. It’s suggested walkers bring water for their dogs.

TeenProv Spring Showcase. Performances start at 7:30 p.m. at the Homewood Science Center, 18022 Dixie Highway. Tickets are $5 cash at the door. Sponsored by South of Chi.

Chicago Jazz Philharmonic. Orbert Davis’ Chicago Jazz Philharmonic will perform Soul Migration at 7:30 p.m. in The Center for Performing Arts at Governors State University, 1 University Parkway, University Park, conducted by Orbert Davis and featuring vocalist Maggie Brown. The work is a tribute to African Americans who took part in the Great Migration of the 20th century. Tickets are available here.

Open House at GSU. Governors State University, 1 University Parkway, University Park, will host an open house from 10 a.m. to noon. Learn about the university, the admissions process, funding and financial aid and scholarship options.

Flossmoor Public Library to close early. The library will close at 2 p.m. for a village-sponsored event.
