H-F debate team takes first place at state tourney

The Homewood-Flossmoor High School debate team won the IDC Varsity State Tournament March 15 and 16 at Illinois State University, becoming the first H-F state champions in Lincoln-Douglas debate in school history.

The winning team was led by Kevin Gibek, a senior, with sophomores Zavier Scott and Max Benitz and Aliya Gaskin, a freshman.

Gibek won first place in individual competition and was name the captain of the All-State Team.

In the category Public Forum, seniors Tarendran Heyward and Undra Pillows finished as quarterfinalists and ultimately took seventh place in state. The team was the most successful Public Forum competitor in H-F history, according to coach Kathyrn Cole. 

H-F also had others competing in Public Forum: seniors Nehemiah Holmes and Natilee Benson, junior Everett Van Til, sophomore Gregory Mitchell and freshmen Jada Cherry and Philip Dickey.

The team is also coached by Emily Carroll, Beverly Lenore, Dan Bush and Tiana Sharpe
