  • Hear a presentation of the Homewood Science Center’s annual report.

  • Consider a contract with Cosgrove Construction for construction management services for the Homewood Auditorium upgrade project. 
  • Consider providing $3,100 in Business Incentive Program funding to Larissa Shipps to help with renovations at 2139 W. 183rd St., where she plans to develop a fitness center in space that has been vacant since 2014.
  • Consider providing $1,320 in Business Incentive Program funding for Mary Jung, a manager at Stepping Stones Child Care Center, 17560 Dixie Highway, for improvements including installation of solar lighting for signage.
  • Consider special use permits for Signature Smiles Arts, 18114 Gottschalk Ave., to expand its office building and Live Free 999 Foundation, 18219 Dixie Highway, for remodeling its office space
  • Consider an ordinance amending the fee schedules for the Building DivisionPublic Works, and Planning and Zoning.

Wednesday, April 29

Hot Topics Spotlight Session on the Lead Service Line Replacement Program. Homewood village staff will host a presentation and discussion from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at village hall, 2020 Chestnut Road, about the 10-year lead line replacement program, which begins this year. A representative from Burns & McDonnell Engineering will be there to answer questions.

Halsted Street Resurfacing. The Illinois Department of Transportation will begin a resurfacing project on Halsted Street on May 4 from Ridge Road in Homewood to Strieff Lane in Glenwood. Work is expected to be completed by August, weather dependent. The street will remain open throughout construction and no detours are expected. Motorists should expect some delays and lane reductions. Direct questions to Homewood Village Engineer Max Massi, at 708-206-3470.

Friends of the Homewood Public Library. The friends organization will meet in the library multipurpose room, 17917 Dixie Highway, from 10 a.m. to noon.

Pickleball Play and Clinics. H-F Racquet & Fitness Club, 2930 W. 183rd St. in Homewood, will host a celebration of the birthday of Bill Bell, one of the founding creators of Pickleball. Baby Bloomers. Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway, will host story time for children aged birth to 2.5 years old and their caregivers. There will be stories, songs, bubbles and free play in the Rauch Reading Room from 10 to 10:30 a.m. Register here.

Planting Day.  Join the University of Illinois Extension team of Master Gardeners and earn community service while helping with the spring clean up and planting from 3 to 6 p.m. at Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway. Bessie Coleman Centennial Aviation Film Festival. The aviation-themed film festival will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Bult Field, 28261 S. Kedzie Ave., Monee. Barb & Dan’s Road Ride. A 25-mile fitness bike ride. Everyone stays together. Leaves GoodSpeed Cycles, 2125 W. 183rd St., every Saturday (weather permitting) at 8 a.m. Returns before 10 a.m. Pace dictated by the riders that show up. Explore our local streets and trail system with Barb & Dan Lawler.

Off-Leash Ride. A nine-mile bike ride at about a 9-to-10 mph pace every Saturday. Route includes Butterfield Creek bike path, Rovers Run and Izaak Walton Preserve. Starts at 8:30 a.m. from GoodSpeed Cycles, 2125 W. 183rd St. in Homewood. Ends back at the shop about 9:30 a.m. for donuts. Kid trailers welcome.

May Day Rally. Action for a Better Tomorrow will host a pro-democracy rally from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Homewood Veterans Memorial at Harwood Avenue and Olive Road. 

Sunday, May 3

Melody Mart Open House. Melody Mart at 18062 Dixie Highway in Homewood will celebrate its 70th anniversary during the open house from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The free, family-friendly day will give guests an opportunity to explore instruments, meet educators, learn about lessons and group programs, and get a feel for what makes Melody Mart a true music community.

Mother’s Sip, Stretch & Spa. Celebrate Mother’s Day early with a soothing stretch, a relaxing mini facial, and a sip in hand. Help mom unwind, recharge and feel appreciated head to toe. Who’s Birthday: A Tribute to Pete Townsend. Homewood Art Council will host its second annual tribute to The Who.  Performers will include Dolph Chaney, Preston Pisellini of The Webstirs, and Joe Starita, Bart and Miranda Winters of Melkbelly dive into the Pete Townshend catalog for an evening out in the woods. House Walk. The Flossmoor Service League’s annual house walk fundraiser moves to Sunday this year. The stroll to view featured houses will be from 1 to 5 p.m. Visit flossmoorserviceleague.org for more information.

Friday, May 22

Walk Through Our Mission. You Matter 2 will host an immersive evening at Flossmoor Community Church, that introduces the organization’s work with youth through storytelling, creativity and connection. Guests will journey through interactive stations led by students, alumni and volunteers, experiencing firsthand how You Matter 2 supports youth from middle school through career readiness. The evening will conclude with a Spotlight Program featuring student stories, a live auction, and a collective paddle raise, which is a fundraising practice for attendees to raise their bidder paddles to commit to specific donation levels, to support  programs. Pride Fest. Homewood-Flossmoor Park District in partnership with the villages of Flossmoor and Homewood will host the annual community-wide Pride celebration in Flossmoor Park starting at 5 p.m. The free party will include live music, food trucks, vendors and fun.

Saturday, June 27

Dancing Away Domestic Violence. The annual fundraiser for Anew: Building Beyond Violence & Abuse, will be from 3 to 6 p.m. at Our Lady of the Heights gym at St. Kieran Parish, 724 195th St., Chicago Heights. Tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for kids 12 and younger, kids 5 and younger are free. An event T-shirt is $12. All proceeds benefit Anew’s programs. Tickets can be purchased here.
