Flossmoor Streetscape Project Update. Village officials report that D Construction finished the curb, planters and sidewalks on the west sides of Park Drive and Sterling Avenue, as well as on both sides of Central Drive and the north side of Flossmoor Road. Work has also begun on the sitting wall in front of the Flossmoor Public Library. In the coming week, work will continue on the sitting wall, and sidewalks will be placed by the library. Sidewalks and parking spaces will be open on the west side of Sterling, as the east side spaces will be closed for sidewalk removal and replacement on that side of the street. In order to keep the project on schedule, the village asks visitors to respect the barrier barrels, cones and caution tape around the new concrete.
Support Our Shops. The Village of Flossmoor is supporting downtown businesses by offering a shopping card available at village hall, 2800 Flossmoor Road, or from downtown businesses. Everyone who makes a purchase at a participating store will receive a sticker. Once the card is full, shoppers can return the card to village hall and receive Flossmoor swag. Offer ends Oct. 1.
Homewood Citizen Civics Academy Fall Session Signup. The Homewood Citizen Civics Academy is a six-week program that gives residents an inside look at how village government operates and provides an opportunity to ask questions along the way. Sessions run from 6 to 8 p.m. on Mondays starting Oct. 6 and ending Nov. 10. The program is more than just a learning opportunity. It’s a chance to build real connections with your neighbors, village leaders and staff. Seats are limited to 35 participants. Register here.
Cook County Property Assessment Appeals for Bremen Township. The property tax assessment appeals period for Bremen Township property owners will close at 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, for in-person filings at the Markham office, 16361 Kedzie Parkway, and 11:59 p.m. for online filings. To make an in-person appointment, call 708-333-1591. No walk-ins accepted. If appealing multiple properties, notify staff when booking. Bring information on no more than three comparable properties and include a written argument. Online appeals can be filed at www.cookcountyassessor.com.

Monday, Aug. 18
Mum, Shrub Sale. Irons Oaks Foundation is taking orders starting Monday, Aug. 18, through Monday, Sept. 15, for its annual sale of mums and fall bushes and shrubs. Plant pick-up will be at the Irons Oaks Environmental Learning Center, 20000 Western Ave., on Sept. 23.
Tuesday, Aug. 19
The Service Hour. Teens aged 10 to 18 are invited to The Attic in the Flossmoor Public Library, 1000 Sterling Ave., from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. for an opportunity to help out in the community. Registration is required.
D&D One-Shot. A Dungeons and Dragons one-shot adventure, where participants will embark on a quest full of magic and mystery from 6 to 8 p.m. at Flossmoor Public Library, 1000 Sterling Ave. Open to seasoned adventurers or first-timers. A Dungeon Master will guide the game and snacks will be provided. Registration is required for each session and limited to 10 participants per session.
Self-Defense for Seniors. A self-defense workshop from 6 to 8 p.m. at Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway, for seniors with Lindsey Daehnke from Strictly Self Defense. Registration required.
Choo-Choo Ride. GoodSpeed Cycle’s slow roll just riding around bike ride for all ages. Meet at the shop, 2125 W. 183rd St., at 6:30 p.m. The ride is about four miles at a leisurely pace. The ride ends at the shop around 7:30 p.m. with Dilly Bars and beers for riders. Helmets required.
Wednesday, Aug. 20
Youth Karate. Wednesdays from 4:45 to 5:30 p.m. or 5:45 to 6:30 p.m. for kids aged 4 to 6 through Oct. 8 at Irwin Center, 18120 Highland Ave. Students will get a good workout while developing coordination, confidence, self-discipline and self- defense. This program can advance students through the belt rank certification process. Gis (karate uniforms) are not required but are available from the instructor for a $30 fee. Certification for ranking belts is available upon completion of requirements at an additional fee. Class fee $69 for H-F Park District residents, $84 for non-residents. Click here to register.

Saturday, Aug. 23
Back-to-School Party. Homewood School District 153 and the Village of Homewood will host a back-to-school event from 3 to 6 p.m. at village hall, 2020 Chestnut Road. There will be big trucks, a DJ spinning kid friendly music, interactive games for all-ages, a rock climbing wall, bubbles, balloons, face painting, community resources and more. Food trucks will be available.
Library Garage Sale. Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway, will host a garage sale in the meeting room from 10 a.m. to noon. No haggling.
Friends of the Library Sidewalk Book Sale. The sale will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway.
Homewood Outdoor Farmers Market. The market will be open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Martin Square on Martin Avenue between Chestnut and Ridge Roads in downtown Homewood. Vendors will offer fresh produce, baked goods, handcrafted jewelry, skincare and more. Food trucks will be on hand and ready-to-eat meals will be available. Liz Smith of Serendipity Yoga will offer a free kids’ yoga session from 11 to 11:45 a.m. Children of all ages are welcome, but the experience is best suited for those who can follow simple directions and enjoy imaginative play. No mats are needed. All necessary materials will be provided.
STEM Saturday. Science play and learning from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Homewood Science Center, 18022 Dixie Highway.
Barb & Dan’s Road Ride. Riders of all experience levels can join the group which leaves at 8 a.m. from GoodSpeed Cycles, 2125 183rd St. in Homewood. There is a no-drop group that rides about 20 miles and stronger riders sometimes go farther. Helmets required, daytime lights strongly recommended.
Off-leash Ride. A leisurely just-riding-around nine-mile ride every Saturday. Route includes Butterfield Creek bike path, Rovers Run and Izaak Walton Preserve. Starts at GoodSpeed Cycles, 2125 183rd St., at 8:30 a.m. sharp, ends back at the shop 9:45ish for donuts.

Meet Our Docs. Franciscan Health Olympia Fields will host an opportunity for south suburban residents to meet physicians serving their communities from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in The Spine at Franciscan Health Olympia Fields, 20201 S. Crawford Ave. in Olympia Fields. A demonstration of the Ion Robot, a breakthrough technology in the early detection of lung cancer, will also be featured. Refreshments, live entertainment, free chair massages and giveaways will be offered, including the chance to win a 65-inch 4K Roku smart television with voice remote. BP Bike Path Project Public Meeting. Country Club Hills will host an informal meeting from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Country Club Hills Amphitheater, 4150 183rd St., to provide an opportunity to learn about the BP Bike Path Project and provide feedback. The proposed 2.15-mile multi-use trail would connect the Tinley Creek and Community Park trail systems, following the right-of-way of the existing BP pipeline. The trail is designed to improve mobility, boost safety and give residents more options for walking, biking and recreation.
Friday, Aug. 29
Homewood Block Party. The last community block party of the year will be from 6 to 10 p.m. on Martin Square between Chestnut and Ridge Roads. Enjoy a summer night in downtown Homewood with great music, local eateries and artisans with unique goods.
District 161 Back-To-School Bash. Head to Flossmoor Park from 4 to 6 p.m. for a back to school celebration. Connect with local resources that support students and community. Kids and adults alike will enjoy treats from Kona Ice and Dip ‘n Double, while exploring a variety of tables hosted by local organizations. Community partners such as Partnership for Resilience, Elevate Therapy, and the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) will be on hand to share information and answer questions. One of the highlights of the event is the return of the popular Spirit Wear Swap. The Flossmoor Library and Flossmoor Green Commission have partnered once again to collect gently used District 161 spirit wear. The Bash is sponsored by the Village of Flossmoor, the Flossmoor Public Library and Flossmoor School District 161.

Pups at the Pad. From 5 to 7 p.m. dogs and their people can enjoy the cool water at the H-F Park District Splash Pad, Millennium Park, 18600 Harwood Ave. in Homewood. This off-leash event is the perfect opportunity for dogs to socialize, play, and beat the heat.

Legislative Write-In. The League of Women Voters Homewood Flossmoor Area will host an opportunity from 5:30 to 8 p.m. for food, fellowship, fun, reuniting, recruiting and writing letters to legislators about important issues.
