Green Drinks focuses on how to effect food waste management

It is estimated more than 92 billion pounds of food is wasted each year. Food waste management is the topic for the Green Drinks session at 6 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 25, at Soundgrowler Brewing Co., 8201 183rd St. in Tinley Park.

Discussion will focus on how to turn the staggering waste of approximately 38% of all food produced in the U.S. into a sustainable opportunity. Guests will learn the root causes of food waste, strategies for composting, energy recovery and community-based solutions that transform waste into usable resources before it ends up in a landfill.

The program’s presenter is Dan Van Lente who has worked in the food service industry for more than a decade. Today he is an environmental studies major at Northeastern Illinois University where he is on an extended internship as a conservation land steward for the Gensburg Markham Prairie, one of the Indian boundary prairies in the South Suburbs.

RSVP’s are encouraged and can be made with Dave Ward at [email protected].
