Highlights. The commission will:

  • Consider a request for a sign variance from LH Companies for signs on the exterior of the Wind Creek Hotel and Casino parking garage. The request also proposes replacing the village’s “welcome to Homewood” sign with a monument sign designed to be consistent with the casino’s branding.
  • Review signage at Essence Salon Suites, 17956 Halsted St., which is compliant with village code but does not match the renderings submitted when the business sought approval earlier this year.
  • Review plans for the proposed Apparel Redefined manufacturing development at 1313 and 1351 W. 175th St.

Homewood-Flossmoor Park District Board of Commissioners Efficiency Committee will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 1, in the Goldberg Administration Center, 3301 Flossmoor Road. The agenda is available here. The board’s monthly committee meeting will follow at 7 p.m. The agenda is available here.

Izaak Walton Photo Contest. The deadline is midnight to submit photos to be considered for the Izaak Walton Preserve’s 2025 calendar. Photos should be high-resolution and can be submitted via email, with photographer’s name, address and phone number plus a title for the photo to [email protected]. Entrants should include the month the photo was taken.

Thursday, Oct. 3

Karaoke at the Q. Twisted Q BBQ, 2053 Ridge Road, will host karaoke from 8 to 11 p.m.

Friday, Oct. 4

H-F High School’s Salute to Service. At the Homewood-Flossmoor varsity football game at 999 Kedzie Ave. there will be a special recognition of area veterans. Kickoff will be at 7:30 p.m. The veterans program will take place during halftime. Information and tickets at www.HFHighSchool.org.

Voter Registration at Homewood Library. The League of Women Voters is planning to host a voter registration event from noon to 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4, in the lobby of the Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway. Registration is open to any citizen 18 or older. 

Murder on the Orient Express. The Drama Group will present the Agatha Christie classic at 330 202nd St. in Chicago Heights. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Oct. 4 and 5, and again at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Oct. 10, 11 and 12. You Matter 2 Haunted House. An event for teens from 5:30 to 9 p.m. at Midnight Terror, 5520 W 111th St. in Oak Lawn. Register here.

Taylor Swift Karaoke. Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway, will give local Swifties a chance to belt out their favorites and make friendship bracelets from 4 to 5:30 p.m. For youth grades K-6 and teens. Register here.

Taylor and Tacos. High school and adult Swifties can celebrate National Taco Day with Taylor Swift karaoke, trivia, crafts and tacos. Register here.

Vital Mobility. Serendipity Yoga and Wellness Studio, 18300 Dixie Highway, will host from 7 to 8 p.m. an opportunity to learn “how the brain plays a vital role in your movement and mobility.” Participants should bring a yoga mat and come dressed comfortably and prepared to move. Tickets are available here.

H-F Chronicle Anniversary Open House. Help the H-F’s local newspaper celebrate its first decade from 2 to 4 p.m. at Flossmoor Station Restaurant & Brewery, 1035 Sterling Ave. Music, food, cash bar and limited edition T-shirts for sale.

Flossmoor Fall Pop-Up Sculpture Tour. The Flossmoor Public Art Commissioners will start the tour at 9:30 a.m. at “Centennial,” the village’s newest sculpture, on the south lawn of the Flossmoor Public Library.

Grandpa’s Garage Sale. The annual sale will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Lions Club Pool, 1041 Ridge Road. Admission is free.

A Haunting in Homewood. Doors will open at 6 p.m. each night and the show starts at 7 p.m. Oct. 5, 6, 12 and 13 in the Homewood Science Center, 18022 Dixie Highway, formerly a funeral home, for showings of supernatural, interactive experience brought to you by Spotlight Performance Academy. Only 50 seats available for each show. “Themes of death and macabre may not be suitable for children.”

Queens of Rock and Soul. A tribute by The Rock and Soul Band to the “women who revolutionized classic rock and soul including Tina Turner, Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight, Stevie Nicks, Pat Benatar, Donna Summers and Whitney Houston.” Hosted from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. by the Center for Performing Arts at Governors State University, 1 University Parkway, University Park. Buy tickets here.

Family Improv. Saturday matinee improv show at 2 p.m. at Irwin Community Center, 18120 Highland Ave. “This show is appropriate for any age. Come give us suggestions and spend the afternoon laughing.” Tickets are $5. Call 708-957-0300 to reserve.

Breanaland Project Support Group. “The Breanaland Project, in association with the Illinois Helpline and City Helps, is offering a support group (2 to 5 p.m.) the first Saturday of the month at The Rock Shop in Homewood, (18109 Dixie Highway). This group welcomes those anywhere on the grief journey, as well as anyone impacted by substance abuse.”

HBCU College Fair. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church, 801 Glenwood Dyer Road in Glenwood. “Meet with representatives from various HBCUs, learn about scholarship opportunities and academic programs, get tips on the college application process.” Light refreshments will be served.

The Groove Lounge with Mady & Nick. Copper Still Martini Bar & Speakeasy, 1961 Ridge Road in Homewood, will host music starting at 7 p.m. No cover.

Expungement Workshop. State Rep. Will Davis and partners will host a workshop on how to qualify and apply for expungement of misdemeanor or felony convictions. The workshop is scheduled to be held from 9:30 a.m. to noon at Thomas J. Kellar Middle School, 14123 Lydia Ave. in Robbins. The event is free and open to the public. Voter registration will be available.

Homewood Farmers Market. Fresh produce, artisan foods, handcrafted personal care item vendors plus live music will all be available on Martin Square between Ridge Road and Chestnut Road from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. 

Barb and Dan’s Road Ride. Weekly bike ride starts at 8 a.m. Saturday from GoodSpeed Cycle, 2125 W. 183rd St. in Homewood. There are two groups. One is a no-one-gets-dropped group that follows a 20-mile route. Another group goes on a longer ride. Helmets required. Lights encouraged. Riders of all experience levels are welcome. 

Off-Leash Bike Ride. A nine-mile ride every Saturday starting at 8:30 a.m. at GoodSpeed Cycle, 2125 W. 183rd St. in Homewood. The route includes Butterfield Creek bike path, past Rover’s Run and through Izaak Walton Preserve. No registration. Donuts upon return.

STEM Saturdays. The Homewood Science Center, 18022 Dixie Highway, is open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. for science play.

Dead Drop Comedy Night. Hosted by Thornton Distilling Co., 400 E. Margaret St., Thornton, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Make reservations here.
