District 153 schools had students out of doors as the 2017-18 school year came to a close on June 7. Field Day activities, on June 6, helped reinforce teamwork while having fun.

District 161 students accomplish reading goal
It wasn’t hard to read a million pages when the more than 2,300 students in District 161 joined forces. The district’s students started a goal for the month of May as the Million Reading Challenge Partnership and kept on reading through the end of the school year on June 7.
D153 reading specialist collecting books for African visit
District 153 reading specialist Maureen Daley is taking her love of books to Africa this summer. Daley will be one of 25 people traveling to Ghana for 10 days through Literacy Empowerment Action Program (LEAP) for Ghana.
D153 SMART lab drawing teachers from across the country
The two-year-old SMART lab at James Hart School in Homewood has given District 153 teachers Katie Nigro and Cheri Pesina an opportunity to show off the lab to teachers from across the United States.

Joy Woods, a June graduate of Homewood-Flossmoor High School, performed as one of 24 outstanding Illinois high school students at the Illinois High School Musical Theatre Awards on June 4.
H-F board approves teachers’ contract
The District 233 school board approved a new three-year contract with the Homewood-Flossmoor Education Organization, giving HFEO members an average annual increase in total compensation of 3.94 percent. Boys track brings 2nd place trophy home to H-F High
It was an exciting season for the Homewood-Flossmoor High School boys track and field team that culminated in a second place finish in the 3A division at the IHSA track and field state championship meet May 26.
Wiley the border collie goes into retirement at Coyote Run
Coyote Run Golf Course is giving Wiley the border collie, its longtime mascot, a break after more than 13 years on the job. The official golf course dog responsibilities now fall to Beatrix, a six-month old rescue dog believed to be a Treeing Tennessee Brindle.
H-F board committees reorganized
Steve Anderson, as president of the District 233 school board, has made several committee changes. He notified board members May 31 of the new assignments. Volunteer recognized for 26 years to the sport of tennis
