“I’m running again due to the fact that I want to keep excellence in our community,” she said. “We have economic development that is just growing by leaps and bounds.

“I’ve seen a lot of improvements in our community, economic development, growth. So that’s why I’m running again, to keep it safe and prosperous for our future.”

She also values the community’s diversity and its role in keeping the community healthy economically.

“I just feel that our community draws so many people in,” she said. “We’re the gem of the Southland. Communities aspire to be like Homewood. I believe that’s why we’re thriving as a great community.”

The flurry of executive action from the Trump administration in recent weeks has generated concern locally about how to support residents if social service programs are disrupted.

In an effort to trim a significant amount from the federal budget, there have been layoffs, funding freezes and discussion of cutting back on programs like Medicare and Medicaid.

“My concern is about healthcare for our residents,” Harris-Jones said. “We have to do a good job to let people know that there’s a safe space.”

She said immigrants, especially, could be at risk, especially if fear of immigration authorities prevented them from seeking care.
