Air quality alert issued for Wednesday

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency has issued an air pollution action alert for  Wednesday, June 21, for the greater Chicago Metropolitan Area, including Homewood and Flossmoor.

The alert will be in effect through Wednesday night.

IEPA officials said an air pollution action day is declared when weather conditions contribute to elevated levels of ozone or particulate matter. Air quality could be unhealthy for people who are sensitive to those conditions.

Active children and adults, especially people with pulmonary or respiratory disease such as asthma, should limit prolonged outdoor activity.

Wednesday will be the sixth Chicago Area Air Pollution Action Day this year. The Chronicle has added an air quality monitor widget to the front page at hfchronicle.com so H-F residents can check on air quality any time.
