Obituary: James R. Wright

James R. Wright, March 10, 2023, age 63, lifelong resident of Homewood. Beloved son of the late Richard O. Wright Sr. and the late Lauretta R. Wright nee La Ponte. Loving brother of Michael F. (Kathleen) Wright, Kathleen A. (Andrew) Sabo, Richard O. Wright Jr., Nancy Jo (Steven) Dubetz and Rae Ann (Steven) Lewis. Dear uncle of Sarah (David Feathergill) Sabo, Drew (Ashley) Sabo, Alex (MacKenzie) Sabo, Cobi Sabo, Evan Dubetz, Patrick Dubetz, Sam Lewis and Ava Lewis. Great-uncle of Carson and Tate Sabo.

A graduate of St. Joseph’s Grade School 1973, Marian Catholic High School 1977, Marquette University 1981.

James served on the Homewood Fire Department for 22 years, four years as a trustee for the Village Board of Homewood and actively involved with the Homewood Historical Society since 1983, serving several terms as president.

An author/historian, he wrote several books on the history of Homewood and his family genealogy. He was also active for many years with the A’s -R-Us Car Club. He was inducted into the Homewood Hall of Fame in 2005. In service to his fellow man, he did volunteer work for the PADS organization for many years.


At the time of his passing, he was employed with Catholic Mutual Group as a claims/risk manager by the Diocese of Joliet.

He enjoyed his 1954 Ford fire chief car and drove it in local parades and the Driving the Dixie event.

Visitation Wednesday March 15, 2023 from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Tews-Ryan Funeral Home, 18230 Dixie Highway in Homewood. Funeral Thursday with 10:15 a.m. prayers at the Funeral Home to St. John Neuman Church (formerly St. Joseph Church) in Homewood, for Mass of the Resurrection at 11 a.m.  Interment to follow at Assumption Cemetery in Glenwood.
