Dixie Highway viaduct closure now set for June 18

Homewood officials announced Thursday, June 11, that the closure of Dixie Highway at the viaduct is scheduled for Thursday, June 18.

The closure originally was set to begin June 8, then was pushed back to June 11. The contractor’s crews are doing preliminary work and assessments before the construction project can begin.

Dixie Highway and Park Avenue are expected to be closed to through traffic for 90 days once construction begins.

The main purpose of the project is to replace drainage line, which includes a collapsed section that contributes to chronic flooding in the viaduct. A section of Dixie Highway from the viaduct to Sycamore Drive also will be resurfaced.

Two main detours have been established to route motorists around the closure. One detour follows 183rd Street, Governors Highway and 175th Street. The other detour uses Ridge Road or 183rd Street to Riegel Road/Ashland Avenue and 171st Street.
