Homewood-Flossmoor boys track had high hopes for the season. The Vikings opened the season ranked No. 1 in the state and held that ranking for much of the spring.
H-F was SouthWest Suburban Conference and sectional champions, dominating both meets.
At state, the Vikings finished fourth, as a team, with 35 points May 28 to 30 at Eastern Illinois University. H-F didn’t win any individual events.
Senior Myles Ellis finished third in the 300-meter hurdles. The North Dakota State football commit also finished fifth in the 4×100 relay with Joaquin Jordan, Charles Dees Jr. and Ceon Barnes Jr.
Jordan, Dees, Ayden Carmichael and Kameron Jones were second in the 4×200 relay with a time of 1:26.13. Anthony Edison jumped 23-feet, 0.75 inches to take third in the long jump and Will Bundy’s 47-1.5 was good for second in the triple jump.

Izenbart qualifies for state in badminton
Anika Izenbart was a state qualifier for the Vikings badminton team.
The senior, who will run cross country at North Park University, lost her opening match at the state meet to Hinsdale Central’s Sara Han but then won three matches in the consolation bracket before losing 21-15, 21-6 to Ava Lee in the fourth round of the singles bracket.
Volleyball run ends at regional final
Boys volleyball won 20 or more games for the fifth consecutive season under coach Mark Ciesielski. The Vikings finished 22-16, including winning the first two postseason matches against Bradley-Bourbonnais and Andrew.
H-F’s season ended with a 25-23, 25-17 loss to Lincoln-Way Central in the regional final.
Surendran Heyward led the Vikings with 361 kills and 197 digs. Alex Wettstein led with 38 aces and had 139 kills and 159 digs. Josh Myers led with 80 total blocks and added 188 kills. Donald Klemick had 407 assists.
No advancers for boys tennis
The Vikings boys tennis team finished fifth at the Lincoln-Way Central sectional. No individuals or doubles teams advanced.
Softball stopped in regional opener
H-F softball finished two games under .500 at 14-16, losing 9-1 to Lincoln-Way West in their regional opener.
Sophomore Taylor Purchas led the Vikings with a .533 average and a 1.396 OPS. She had 40 hits, including 12 doubles and only struck out twice. Purchas also stole seven bases.
Izzy Thurman hit seven home runs and had 25 RBIs while pitching 75.1 innings and striking out 105 to post a 2.42 ERA. Demi Chaney hit five home runs and drove in 25.
Girls soccer falls in regional final
H-F girls soccer opened the postseason with a 4-3 win over Bloom but lost 2-0 to Lincoln-Way Central in the Andrew Regional final. The Vikings posted an 8-12 record and were 1-5 in the SouthWest Suburban Blue.
Boys water polo season ends in quarterfinals
The Vikings boys water polo team lost to Andrew in its first postseason game, falling 15-8 to finish the season 13-16. It’s the team’s most wins since 2022.
Joe Olison led the team with 122 goals. Caylum Ganshirt had 50 assists and 43 steals.
LWE ends season for girls water polo
H-F girls water polo won a playoff match with Stagg 8-9 to move into the second round of the Lincoln-Way Central sectional. There, the Vikings met eventual sectional champ Lincoln-Way East. The Griffins took a 15-3 victory.
