The Flossmoor Village Board approved resolutions supporting temporary road closures for the 2026 Hidden Gem Half Marathon, which organizers plan to hold Sept. 12 throughout several neighborhoods in the village.
According to a village memorandum from Assistant Village Manager Jonathan Bogue, the race would mark the seventh Hidden Gem Half Marathon organized by Flossmoor’s Future, a registered Illinois nonprofit organization.
The proposed route would begin on Flossmoor Road in front of Infant Jesus of Prague School before winding through neighborhoods including Baythorne, Ballantrae, Flossmoor Hills and Highlands, Old Flossmoor, Heather Hill, Braeburn/Brassie and Flossmoor Park. The race will finish on Sterling Road north of the Flossmoor Public Library.
Village officials said the race is expected to conclude by approximately 11:15 a.m., with cleanup completed by 1 p.m.

The approved resolutions request Cook County approval to temporarily close Kedzie Avenue from just south of Baythorne Drive to just north of Flossmoor Road, Governors Highway from just south of Flossmoor Road to just north of the Homewood-Flossmoor High School campus and Flossmoor Road from Hamlin Avenue to Western Avenue, between 6 a.m. and noon on Sept. 12.
Race officials capped the race at 1,200 participants. The race sold out within a few hours after registration opened April 1.
According to the memorandum, organizers will be responsible for race timing, portable toilets, traffic control devices, side street closures and cleanup. Flossmoor’s Future also will reimburse the village for police, fire and public works costs associated with the event.
The organization is also required to provide at least $1 million in general liability insurance naming the village as an additional insured party.
Officials said the race course was designed to minimize the amount of time Governors Highway and Kedzie Avenue would need to remain closed, though Flossmoor Road is expected to remain closed for most of the event. Western Avenue also would be closed during the latter portion of the race.
Village staff said residents and businesses affected by the route will be notified in advance, and volunteers and police personnel will be stationed throughout the course to assist with traffic and safety.
The race is also expected to affect Metra parking areas, the Flossmoor Public Library and businesses located downtown and east of Leavitt Avenue along Flossmoor Road during the event.
Staff recommended approval of the resolutions, stating they were satisfied with the proposed route and logistics plan.
