Respond Now Food Pantry Update. While renovations at 1439 Emerald Ave. near completion, Respond Now will open a temporary food pantry at 20820 Western Ave., Olympia Fields, thanks to the generosity of The Emmaus Community. The pantry will be open today, Nov. 10 and Nov. 12-14 from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Regular pantry rules apply, and shelf-stable items are all that will be available due to storage limitations (no meat, dairy, or produce).
Arthritis Aqua. Fridays through Nov. 28 from 9 to 10 a.m. at the H-F Racquet & Fitness Club, 2920 W. 183rd St. This gentle exercise class helps participants decrease pain and stiffness, improve or maintain joint flexibility, and gain muscle strength, balance and coordination. Class structured for people with arthritis but anyone is welcome. Activities are tailored to participants’ abilities and skill levels, and participants do not need to be able to swim. For ages 18 and up. The fee is $40 for H-F Park District residents, $60 for non-residents. Click here to register.
Saturday, Nov. 8
Ho-Flo Cranksgiving Ride. GoodSpeed Cycle will host its annual food drive on two wheels. It’s part bike ride, part scavenger hunt. At noon, riders pick up a manifest from the bike shop at 2125 W. 183rd St. that will list area grocery stores and needed items. Using any preferred route, riders buy at least one item from every store and deliver to Rabid Brewing, 17759 Bretz Drive in Homewood, by 4 p.m. The drive will benefit Restoration Ministries. Unsung Modernist in the Mid-Century Southland. Marcy Dinius, professor at DePaul University, will give a lection on Homewood architect John McPherson from 2 to 4 p.m. at Black Bear Lodge in the Izaak Walton Preserve, 1100 Ridge Road in Homewood. There will be a bonfire, and seasonal pies will be served. In honor of McPherson’s Scottish/Irish roots guests are invited to wear plaid. Tickets are available here.
Izaak Walton Turkey Raffle, Bake Sale, Auction. Annual fundraiser for the preserve will start at 7 p.m. in Senior Hall, 1100 Ridge Road. Individual raffle tickets cost $5 each or $25 for a booklet of six tickets. Auction items include gift certificates & merchandise from local merchants and golf courses.
STEM Saturday. Science play and learning from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Homewood Science Center, 18022 Dixie Highway.
Off-leash Ride. A leisurely just-riding-around nine-mile ride every Saturday. Route includes Butterfield Creek bike path, Rovers Run and Izaak Walton Preserve. Starts at GoodSpeed Cycles, 2125 183rd St., at 8:30 a.m. sharp, ends back at the shop 9:45ish for donuts.
