Homewood School District 153 and the Village of Homewood partnered to host a back-to-school party at Village Hall on Aug. 23 to celebrate the start of the new academic year.
Community members enjoyed music spun by a DJ, games, a rock climbing wall and many other activities. Food trucks provided refreshments, and kids were able to climb inside a village of Homewood ambulance to have a look around.

In addition to fun activities, the event was an opportunity for students to learn about extracurricular activities outside of school, like Boy Scouts, local dance troupes and programming offered by the Homewood Science Center.
The event also served as a valuable opportunity for students and families to engage with various community resources and participate in the Rock Shop’s book swap.
“It’s just exciting to have kids back, and we’ve had a wonderful start to the school year,” Superintendent Scott McAlister said. “The enthusiasm is here. Teachers are excited to be back, and it’s just a wonderful time of year. I always look forward to August. We anticipate this school year will be like any other, and we’re certainly off to a good start.”

McAlister, who will be retiring in June 2026, said his last back-to-school event as superintendent could be described as bittersweet.
“I am ready for retirement, but I love doing what I do,” he said.
Several students at the event said they were happy to catch up with friends at school, but were sad that summer was over. Fourth-grade student Alyse Brackin, while initially unsure if she was ready to return to school, said she was looking forward to “learning lots of math.”
Students in District 153 schools began the new academic year on Aug. 20.
