Homewood Police Officer Ken Norbut hits the racetrack for a cause in 2025 Torch Run Five-O Race

On Aug. 2, Homewood Police Officer Ken Norbut will trade in his patrol car for something a little faster, his very own race car, when he takes the wheel in this year’s Torch Run Five-O Race, an event that raises funds and awareness for Special Olympics Illinois.

Norbut is not only the participant, he’s the proud owner and mechanic of the 2010 Ford Crown Victoria he’ll be driving. With a passion for motorsports and an even greater passion for serving his community, Norbut purchased the vehicle earlier this year and has been working tirelessly to bring it back to racing condition. From tune-ups to bodywork, every turn of the wrench has brought him one step closer to the finish line.

The Torch Run Five-O Race is part of the larger Law Enforcement Torch Run initiative, in which officers across the state raise money and awareness for the thousands of athletes served by Special Olympics Illinois.

“For me, this event isn’t just about racing. It’s about doing something meaningful for the athletes of Special Olympics,” Norbut said. “They inspire me with their strength and determination. I’m honored to represent the Village of Homewood and do my part to support them.”

The race, known for its adrenaline-pumping action and heartwarming mission, draws law enforcement personnel from across the state of Illinois. Norbut’s participation highlights Homewood’s continued dedication to supporting inclusive programs and community outreach.

The race will take place at Grundy County Speedway. Proceeds will directly benefit the athletes of Special Olympics Illinois.
