Families brought their young ones for an educational fun time at the Homewood Public Works from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on May 17.
The open house offered various stations for kids to explore, including a dress-up section. Kids were able to step into the shoes of workers by trying on vests, safety caps and goggles.
Several trucks were open to families to hop on and interact with. Informative signs with educational facts were posted throughout the area to explain the purpose and workings of things in a way that was easy for kids to understand.
A water main operation was also conducted where kids got to watch workers tighten a big pipe to try and stop it from leaking.
At the next station over, there was a tour around the water plant given by Eric Fritz, utility department supervisor. Attendees got to see the location of the chlorine room and water pumps.
“We pump about two and half million gallons a day because we also provide to Flossmoor and East Hazel Crest with that,” Fritz said.
Fritz also pointed out the sampling station, where daily testing is conducted to ensure everything is in compliance, he said.
To add to the fun and excitement, kids were set on a quest during their exploration to find orange rocks hidden around the property outside. If successful, they got to claim a prize of their choice. Prize options included toy ducks and cars, and some public works themed stickers and accessories.
A raffle entry was also held. The winner will be given a ride to school in a snow plow.
