Homewood residents asked to shelter in place while police pursue suspect

Homewood residents in the area of 186th Street and Riegel Road received an emergency alert just after 4 p.m. Friday, April 25, advising them to shelter in place because of police activity. Willow School was placed on lockdown, although students were gone already.

Homewood police assisted Chicago Heights officers in locating a person who was thought to be armed. The suspect was fleeing from Chicago Heights when he crashed a vehicle into a tree on Riegel and fled on foot, police said. A K9 unit assisted during the search. Residents also reported helicopters hovered over the area.

The suspect later was found and was taken into custody by Chicago Heights police in the 1500 block of 187th Street. A firearm was recovered near the crash site, police said.

The all clear alert was sent to residents shortly after 4:30 p.m. No one was injured in the incident, police said.

Anyone who wishes to sign up for the emergency alert system can find information and sign up at the Homewood village website.

Police urge anyone with information about the incident to contact the Chicago Heights Police Department at 708-756-6400.
