Two student organizations at Homewood-Flossmoor High School are conducting a children’s book drive as an act of service project in honor of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service on Jan. 20.

The National Honor Society (NHS) and Friends of the H-F Library club are sponsoring the book drive to benefit Bernie’s Book Bank of Chicago. Students are collecting new and gently used books for birth through grade 6.

Books are being collected at the high school’s library, 999 Kedzie Ave. in Flossmoor through Jan. 17. On the day of the MLK celebration Jan. 20, books can be left at Redbird Café, 2057 Ridge Road in Homewood.
The NHS sponsor is Marina Brennan, H-F school psychologist, and the Friends of the H-F Library sponsors are school librarians Jane Harper and Alicia Rodriguez.

According to Reading Literacy, 61 percent of low-income U.S. families have no books at home for their children. Bernie’s Book Bank sources, processes and distributes quality new and gently used children’s books to significantly increase book ownership among at-risk infants, toddlers and school-age children throughout the Chicago area. The organization serves 360,000 children with approximately 12 free books annually.
