Police: Fatal crash on Halsted involved wrong-way driver

The three-vehicle crash in Homewood on April 18 that claimed the life of a Markham man involved a wrong-way driver, according to Homewood police.

The crash occurred at 11:52 a.m. and involved a semi-truck, a 2019 Chevy Malibu and a 2008 Chevy Aveo.

The driver of the 2019 Chevy Malibu allegedly was traveling northbound on Halsted Street in the southbound lane as it passed Ridge Road. The driver crossed over the raised center median back into the northbound lane in the 17800 block and struck the rear end of the Aveo, which was waiting in the left turn lane, according to police.

After the collision, the Aveo was pushed into the southbound lanes and was struck again by a semi-truck with tractor trailer that was traveling southbound.

The driver of the Aveo, Lewis Nunn, 67, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Homewood police closed Halsted following the crash, and traffic in both directions was rerouted for more than six hours.

Police and members of the Suburban Major Accident Reconstruction Team (SMART) continue to investigate the crash. No charges have yet been filed against the driver of the Malibu.
