Family-to-Family mental illness program starts Jan. 10

The National Alliance on Mental Illness-South Suburbs of Chicago chapter is hosting a free, eight-week Family-to-Family educational program for family, significant others and friends of people with mental health condition. The first session will be Tuesday, Jan. 10, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the Bremen Township Senior Complex, 15350 Oak Park Ave. in Oak Forest.

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Family-to-Family is taught by NAMI-trained family members who have been there, and includes presentations, discussions and interactive exercises. It is a designated, evidenced-based program using research that shows the program significantly improves the coping and problem-solving abilities of the people closest to a person with a mental health condition.

At the sessions, information and strategies are presented on taking care of loved ones. Participants also will find mutual support and a shared positive impact by experiencing compassion and reinforcement from people who understand the situation.

Topics will include:

  • Up-to-date information on mental health conditions and how they affect the brain.
  • How to handle a crisis.
  • Current treatments and therapies.
  • How to solve problems and communicate effectively.
  • Self care and managing stress.
  • Supporting loved ones with compassion.
  • Finding and using local supports and services.

Participants will receive a free workbook and certificate of completion.

For additional information and to register, contact Marianne Bithos at 708-852-9126 or [email protected].

This program will be offered again in the spring. To be placed on the wait list, contact Bithos or email NAMI.
