The National Weather Service said Wednesday’s 96-degree reading at O’Hare Airport set a record. Tuesday’s high at O’Hare was 96 degrees and a record 100 degree reading was set at Midway Airport. That 100-degree reading broke a 99-degree record set in 1987.
Despite the heat Tuesday, members of the Homewood Police Department, friends and supporters ran 2.2 miles for the annual Torch Run for Special Olympics. Runners required plenty of water when they finished the run at the village hall parking lot.
The National Weather Service forecast for Thursday, June 16, is for temperatures in the mid-90s with winds at 10 to 15 miles per hour, and a cooling trend for the weekend with temperatures in the 70s and 80s.
Maple Tree Inn in Homewood took the day off Wednesday because of the heat. The restaurant was open only to accept phone orders for its Father’s Day BBQ package. The restaurant planned to reopen at 5 p.m. Thursday, June 16.
Young and old alike found a great way to cool off — a plunge in Lions Club Pool, 1041 Ridge Road in Homewood. The pool is open from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday; noon to 7 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
The Millennium Park Splash Pad, for kids 54-inches tall or shorter, is open from 10 a.m.. to noon, 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. daily.
