After months of installing underground utilities and paving, crews at Flossmoor’s Meijer site started putting up the superstore’s walls this week.

Scott Bugner, Flossmoor’s director of inspectional services, said construction of walls for the 192,000-square-foot store at the intersection of Vollmer Road and Crawford Avenue began Monday.

By Tuesday, it was clear that progress on the walls was moving steadily ahead. The Meijer store is being built on the north side of Vollmer Road just east of Crawford Avenue.

With favorable weather conditions, Bugner said, it will take about three weeks to complete putting up the store’s pre-cast walls.

According to Meijer’s plans, the store’s walls and roof are to be completed by the time cold weather arrives. That way, work on the interior of the building can proceed throughout the winter so that the store is ready to open next spring.

 “Everything is going well at this time and appears to pretty much on schedule,” Bugner said.

Footings and the foundation for the store building were installed in July. Work is also going forward on interior streets at the Meijer complex, which will also include a gas station and several outlots where other stores will eventually be built.
