Thornton Township Board of Trustees will hold a special meeting at 4 p.m. Monday, Dec. 30, in Harvey city hall, 15320 Broadway Ave. The agenda is available here. Two trustees have announced they do not plan to attend, so there might not be a quorum present to conduct business.
Holiday notices
Homewood Disposal. Service will be on a normal schedule Monday, Dec. 30, and Tuesday, Dec. 31. No service on New Years Day, Jan. 1. Wednesday pickup will be on Thursday, Jan. 2; Thursday pickup will be on Friday, Jan. 3; and Friday pickup will be on Saturday, Jan. 4.
Metra. Metra trains will be operating on a reduced schedule Tuesday, Dec. 31. Metra will offer free rides on all trains arriving at or departing from Metra’s downtown stations after 6 p.m. Tuesday for New Year’s Eve. Alcohol will be banned on all trains after 7 p.m. On Wednesday, Jan. 1, Metra will operate on a Sunday/Holiday schedule. Click here for train schedules and ticket information.

Monday, Dec. 30
Winter Break Nintendo Switch Tournament. Well, Christmas may be over but winter break is not. Rather than sitting at home, come and play Smash Brothers at the library. Refreshments will be available. Flossmoor Public Library, 1000 Sterling Ave., will host from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. for kids aged 7 and up. Registration is appreciated. Visit flossmoorlibrary.org for more information.
Community Menorah Lighting. Celebrate Hanukkah with the traditional lighting of the menorah at 5 p.m. each night through Jan. 1 in Flossmoor Park, Braeburn Avenue and Flossmoor Park.
Community Kinara Lighting. Celebrate Kwanzaa with the traditional lighting of the kinara candles at 5 p.m. each night through Jan. 1 in Flossmoor Park, Braeburn Avenue and Flossmoor Park.
Tuesday, Dec. 31
Noon Year’s Eve Party. The H-F Park District will host a party from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. to ring in the new year at the H-F Sports Complex, 18211 S. Aberdeen Ave. in Homewood. Kids aged 5 to 12 who might not stay up until midnight can welcome the new year with “a fun-filled celebration complete with festive games, crafts and a countdown to noon. Kids will enjoy music, snacks, and a sparkling toast, according to the park district Facebook page. The fee is $10 for district residents, $15 for non-residents. Register here.
Welcoming the New Year. Serendipity Yoga and Wellness Studio will host a mini-retreat and vision boarding session from noon to 3 p.m. at 18300 Dixie Highway in Homewood. An opportunity to “honor the past and embrace the optimism and beauty of the new year.” The event will include guided writing and meditation prompts to help “clarify and empower your intentions for the year ahead.” More information here. Wind Creek New Year’s Eve Celebration. Starting at 6 p.m., the casino at 17300 Halsted St. will offer live band, dance floor, a dazzling balloon drop, $4 Prosecco pours and more. Must be 21 years of age or older.
Saturday, Jan. 4
STEM Saturdays. The Homewood Science Center hosts fun learning play from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 18022 Dixie Highway. Activities include Pixel Pegs, Early Math Counts, Children’s Book Inspired Making and Tinkering, Imagination Playground, Dinosaur Bones, LEGO Wall, Behind the Wall, Ramps and Pathways and Guacamole the T-Rex.
Plan ahead
Drama Group auditions. Audition sign up for “Dreamgirls” is now open. Auditions will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. on Jan. 12 and 7 to 10 p.m. on Jan. 14. More information on this season’s audition schedule is available here.
