Obituary: Brenda L. DeThomas Konop (Feb. 21, 1967 – Dec. 14, 2024)

Brenda was born on February 21, 1967, in Chicago Heights, Illinois, the daughter of Charles A. and Ruth E. Karczewski DeThomas. She graduated from Bloom High School in Chicago Heights and went on to earn a degree in Surgical Technology from Prairie State College in Chicago Heights.

On April 23, 1999, Brenda married David A. Konop in Chicago, Illinois. As a military wife, she embraced a life of travel while David served in the United States Army. The couple lived throughout the United States and Europe, building memories until his honorable discharge in 2014. In 2012, they were stationed at Fort Drum and chose to settle in Watertown, NY.

Brenda’s career began as a medical claims processor, working with several businesses in the local area before finding her professional home as a unit coordinator at Carthage Area Hospital. She also gave back to her community as a volunteer with the Vincenza Women’s Wives Club and the Wiesbaden Wives Club during her time as a military spouse. She served as a program chairman and an active member of the PTA in Wiesbaden.

Brenda was a kind and giving soul who cherished time spent with her family and friends. She enjoyed reading, listening to music, and was a devoted follower of the band Annie in the Water.

Brenda is survived by her loving husband of 25 years, David A. Konop of Watertown, NY; her son, Dominic A. Konop of North Carolina; two stepchildren, Ryan (Dana) Konop of Binghamton, NY, and Sara (Joseph) Bladdick of Webb City, Missouri; four beloved grandchildren, Lane, Camden, Cole, and Millie Jo; her mother, Ruth E. DeThomas of Steger, IL; her brother, Larry (Rhonda) DeThomas of Steger, IL; mother in law, Phyllis Konop, brother in law Thomas (Donna) Konop; and her nieces, Niki (Will) Petersen, Mandy DeThomas, Kristina (Mark) Rappa and Stephanie (Derek) Connery.

Calling hours will be held on Saturday, December 21, 2024, from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Hart and Bruce Funeral Home, Watertown, NY. A funeral service will immediately follow at 2:00 p.m. Burial will take place at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Brenda’s memory may be made to the American Heart Association, care of Stacy Spaziani, 204 Iroquois Avenue West, Watertown, NY 13601.
