The east side of Homewood train station will reopen Monday, Dec. 9, after being closed 20 months for major renovation, according to Metra officials.
The $20.7 million project completely rebuilt the station facility, adding improvements to ADA accessibility.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony is being planned for Dec. 13. Details are still being worked out, according to Metra spokesman Michael Gillis.
The station now includes an ADA-accessible east headhouse with a ramp, a renovated platform, wind breaks, warming house and gatehouse, Gillis said. Upgrades to the facility also included new drainage, ventilation, lighting and interior finishes in the existing tunnel; and replacement of the elevator and stairs connecting the tunnel to the platform.
In addition, a new Pace bus facility was created with three bus bays, a covered waiting area, and driver relief facilities.
The project was funded in part by a Federal Transit Administration Shared Transportation Program (STP) grant of $9.25 million. Additional funding came from the Regional Transportation Authority, Cook County, Pace and Metra.
The project was the second phase in the complete renovation of the station. Amtrak completed improvements to its platform, the west side entrance and the ticket office building in 2022. That part of the project cost $15 million and took about two years to complete.
