Monday, July 8

Storytime in the Park. Flossmoor Public Library will hold a storytime for children from birth to age 4 or kindergarten through second grade in Leavitt Park, 1010 Leavitt Ave., from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Register for your spot at one of our outdoor storytimes at Leavitt Park. Bring blankets or chairs. Storytime will be moved to the library in the event of bad weather or heat advisories. Register here.

Flowering Dogwood Martial Arts Way. Adults are invited to Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. to learn about Japanese swordspersonship and how it can be a safe and engaging fitness hobby.

Tuesday, July 9

Choo-Choo Ride. The weekly four- to five-mile bike ride through Homewood and Flossmoor neighborhoods returns. Riders will meet at 6 p.m. at GoodSpeed Cycles, 2125 183rd St. The ride starts at 6:30 p.m. It continues Tuesdays weekly at the same place and time through Labor Day.

Wednesday, July 10

Community Band Concert. The band, directed by Rob Calhoon, will perform at 7 p.m. in Irwin Park, 18120 Highland Ave. in Homewood.

Candle Making Workshop. Kim Rowe, owner of Blue Pearl Candles in Homewood, will offer a candle making workshop from 6 to 8 p.m. at Thornton Distilling Company, 400 E. Margaret St. in Thornton. Purchase tickets here.

Rhythm Basics. Flossmoor Public Library, 1000 Sterling Ave., will host a presentation from 7 to 8 p.m. by Tom Maslowski on the fundamentals of rhythm for novice musicians or experienced musicians with questions. Registration is not required.

Thursday, July 11

Miss Rosie’s Movie Club. Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway, will host screenings of action and adventure movies in F.O.R.T. from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. every Thursday all summer. Hosted by Rosie Joyce. For teens.

Matilda Jr. Spotlight Performance Academy will present “Matilda Jr. the Musical” at 7 p.m. in Freedom Hall, 410 Lakewood Blvd. in Park Forest. Tickets are available here.

Saturday, July 13

Pop-up Sculpture Tour. Flossmoor Public Art Commission will host a sculpture tour from 9:30 to 11 a.m. The tour will begin at the southeast corner of Flossmoor Park at the intersection of Flossmoor Road and Brassie Avenue by the new trio of sculptures and will end in Leavitt Park near Jason Verbeek’s “Land Jacks.”

Homewood Community Garage Sale. A number of homes in Homewood will host garage sales from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Check the Facebook page for more details.

BBQ for the Troops. Chevrolet of Homewood, 18033 Halsted St., will host its 11th annual BBQ for the Troops to raise money for the USO starting at 11 a.m. All branches of the military will be present with support from the local businesses, along with a face painting and a bouncy house.

The Basics Of Metal Detecting. 
Flossmoor Public Library, 1000 Sterling Ave., will host a session on the basics of metal detecting in the Helen Wilson Meeting Room from 1 to 2:30 p.m. A metal detector will be coming soon to the Library of Things so patrons can check it out to give it a try. Members of the Illinois Metal Detecting Association will be available to answer questions.

Kids Fest at Wampum Lake. The Forest Preserves of Cook County will host a day of fun for kids and families including nature exploration, crafts, archery and canoeing at Wampum Lake on Thornton-Lansing Road east of Thornton.

Barb and Dan’s Road Ride. Weekly bike ride starts at 8 a.m. Saturday from GoodSpeed Cycle, 2125 W. 183rd St. in Homewood. There are two groups. One is a no-one-gets-dropped group that follows a 20-mile route. Another group goes on a longer ride. Helmets required. Lights encouraged. Riders of all experience levels are welcome.

Off-Leash Bike Ride. A nine-mile ride every Saturday starting at 8:30 a.m. at GoodSpeed Cycle, 2125 W. 183rd St. in Homewood. The route includes Butterfield Creek bike path, past Rover’s Run and through Izaak Walton Preserve. No registration. Donuts upon return.

Summer Sidewalk Sale. Nine Homewood Business Association members will be participating in a sidewalk sale on Friday, July 19, and Saturday, July 20. See the HBA website for more information.
