Erma Amstadter, nee Kallen, age 99, of Flossmoor passed away Sunday, May 26, 2024, at Northwestern Medicine Palos Hospital in Palos Heights. The beloved mother of Marc Amstadter of Chicago was preceded in death by her husband, Laurence Amstadter, brother, Thomas Kallen, and son John Amstadter.
A native of Chicago’s Hyde Park neighborhood and graduate of the University of Chicago, Erma was the daughter of the late Milton and Bertha Kallen. Mrs. Amstadter taught history at Rich South and Rich East High Schools and later instructed student teachers at Governor’s State University. A founding member of Temple Anshe Shalom in Olympia Fields and 75-year resident of Flossmoor, Erma enjoyed gardening, baking, going to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and traveling the world.
In addition to her son, Mrs. Amstadter is survived by daughters in law Arleen Amstadter of Flossmoor and Eleanor Wolfe of Chicago; grandsons Noah Amstadter of Schererville, IN (Jennifer Stojanovich); Eli Amstadter of Chicago (Marissa Hyman Amstadter); and Jacob Amstadter of Flossmoor; great-grandchildren Jonah Amstadter and Jori Amstadter; sister-in-law Esta Kallen of Chicago; and several nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
The memorial will be held on Sunday June 9, 2024 at Idlewild Country Club at 19201 Dixie Highway Flossmoor, Illinois 60422.
