Back to School event ushers in new year

Students, parents and community members gathered for a fun afternoon Saturday, Aug. 27, on the grounds of James Hart School for the District 153 Back to School event.

Kids got to play games on the field behind the school. The James Hart School orchestra played several selections, there was a yoga demonstration and Miss Angela from the Homewood Public Library read a story to the youngest children.

The district invited organizations and non-profits to set up information booths that included Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, a chance to register to vote with the League of Women Voters, and select reading materials from Bookie’s Book Store in downtown Homewood. School board members also were present to share information about the Nov. 8 referendum.

Throughout the afternoon, there were drawings for backpack giveaways, and everyone could enjoy a summer treat from Dairy Queen.
