Park district gets funding for Homewood Estates Park

The Homewood-Flossmoor Park District has been awarded a $292,700 grant for work at Homewood Estates Park.

Debbie Kopas, parks executive director, made the announcement at the board of commissioners Jan. 21 meeting. This is a 50/50 match grant, so the park district’s share will be included in the next budget cycle, she said.

The park district annually reviews its parks and decided Homewood Estates Park, 18200 California Ave., could use new play equipment and other changes.

When it was learned the Open Space Land and Development (OSLAD) grant program was again being offered, commissioners decided funding could be used for additional upgrades at the park.

Commissioners held several neighborhood meetings to give residents the chance to review the plans for a redesign proposed by Upland Design. The 15-acre park would be reconfigured for new walking paths around the park, an upgraded youth soccer field, a new shelter that would replace the portable tent used in summer, new playground equipment and the melding of three baseball fields into two.

Kopas said she will be meeting with Upland Design on next steps.
