“Getting off on the right foot” is a cliche for a reason. A good start helps make the journey a success.

Parents, teachers and other community members spent Wednesday afternoon creating colorful, positive and supportive greetings on the sidewalks and playgrounds of the schools.
At Serena Hills School, Ebonie Hall of Chicago Heights was drawing a greeting for her twins, Madison and Mason.
This was the second year Hall participated in the project. She said the twins were delighted to find the message last year.
“What better day to do it than the first day of school?” she said. “Encouraging words are important in our family.”

The message, enclosed in a large heart shape, wished Madison and Mason good luck.
Nearby, the twins’ fourth-grade teacher, Ingrid Vann, drew a message for her new students, “Fourth grade will be Vanntastic” with a star, a heart, two concentric circles and two snowflakes for decoration.
Homewood District 153 students will also receive encouraging words the first day of school, Aug. 21. Families and teachers are invited to Chalk the Walk at district schools on Tuesday, Aug. 20.
