Flossmoor Police Department has named two internal promotions to take on the roles of deputy chief and police commander.

Police Chief Tod Kamleiter on Wednesday appointed former Administrative Sergeant Clint Wagner to the role of deputy chief and former Sergeant Keith Taylor to the role of police commander.

Kamleiter spoke to Wagner and Taylor’s qualifications in a village press release.

“Clint and Keith both possess their own skills and strengths when it comes to administrative and supervisory functions,” he stated in the release. “They also share my vision when it comes to community engagement and building partnerships with the residents of the village, which is an important element to a strong leadership team.”

The title of police commander is a new addition for the department that was approved Monday by the Flossmoor Village Board at Kamleiter’s request. The position is third in command beneath police chief and deputy chief and replaces the administrative sergeant position.

The deputy chief is responsible for the overall supervision of daily operations and the direct supervision of investigations and the records division, Kamleiter said.

The police commander is in charge of overseeing all patrol functions as a direct supervisor to patrol sergeants and staff and providing high-level assistance to the deputy chief and police chief.

The police commander will report directly to the deputy chief and take on all decision-making authority for the department in the absence of the police chief and deputy chief. The annual salary approved for the position is $94,501 to $118,126.

Kamleiter said he found the need to instate the police commander title in place of administrative sergeant after a recent review of the department’s command structure showed job descriptions which no longer accurately described responsibilities.

Wagner and Taylor will be ceremonially sworn in during the Jan. 6 board meeting.

Wagner joined the department in 2001 as a patrol officer and rose through the ranks to shift leader, sergeant and administrative sergeant. He previously worked at the Chicago Heights and Sauk Village police departments.

Taylor joined the department in 2009 as a patrol officer after working a number of years as a Cook County Sheriff’s Department correctional officer and drill instructor. Taylor also served four years of active duty as a Military Police Officer in the United States Navy.
