Former District 153 board member Tom Dockweiler presented copies of two books, "Throw Like a Girl" and "Boys in the Boat" to the three winners of this year's Dockweiler Award, presented at the board's Oct. 15 meeting.The books offer inspiring stories that underscore the importance of hard work in pursuit of difficult goals, a message Dockweiler was known for advocating while he was a board member.Board president Shelly Marks reminded the audience why the award was named for Dockweiler.

Saturday, July 2

  • Roots + Fire Water grand opening, 11 a.m. at 1941 Ridge Road in Homewood.

Monday, July 4

  • Flossmoor Volunteer Fire Department kids parade, starting at 10 a.m. at Parker Junior High, ending in downtown Flossmoor.
  • Homewood 4th of July parade, staring at 10 a.m. at the St. Joseph Catholic Church parking lot, 17951 Dixie Highway, south to Ridge Road, then east to Izaak Walton Nature Preserve, where there will be a community picnic.
