First-time-ever virtual fitness classes at the Homewood-Flossmoor Racquet & Fitness Club offer opportunities whether you’re an early riser, have free time in the afternoon or want to fill an open evening on your calendar.

Tricia Butcher, exercise coordinator, said several sessions will be programmed but the virtual classes are meant to bring people together.

“We’ve seen so many younger people on their iPads or iPhones and we asked how we could get these people together” and make it a better experience than watching a video from a phone on the floor, Butcher said.

The videos are provided by Les Mills, an international company offering choreographed exercise-to-music group fitness classes. The virtual fitness room at the club can accommodate a maximum of 32 people. On April 25, when the club showed its first Mills video, 22 people were there at 5 p.m. to participate.

Butcher said the videos feature exercises both with and without equipment. Staff has selected 10 videos of various formats for starters. Information on those videos is alongside a kiosk that lists all available videos. Butcher expects guests will choose the video they want, program the viewing time from 10 to 60 minutes and set the level for beginner, intermediate and advanced. Video programming options by guests will be on a first-come, first-served basis, she said.

The club, at 2920 W. 183rd St. in Homewood, has 40 live classes with instructors on-site, including aqua classes, “so this will complement those,” Butcher said.
