Some may say it takes a “green thumb” but most gardeners know it takes serious dedication, hard work and lots of water to keep a garden spectacular enough to win a blue ribbon.
The Homewood Beautification Committee awarded blue ribbons to nine homeowners for their outstanding gardening work that enhanced the appearance of their homes.

The winners, along with 35 beautification award winners and 152 businesses were honored at a program Oct. 25 at the Irwin Center.
During the summer months, committee members survey Homewood to judge the houses where landscaping has added to the particular home or business and the neighborhood.

Susan and William Burnette were unable to attend the ceremony, but their daughters Heather Burnette and Tiffany Osberg were present. They said their parents are “passionate” about their yard. It’s a serious hoppy for them, Osberg said. They’ve even gone hunting for additions, such as little tree houses and a bird bath.
Blue ribbon winner Linda Bouck’s award-winning garden played up begonia and lime hydrenga. “Springtime was perfect this year,” for planting, she said.
Bouck has been in her house on Linden Road for 30 years and over that time, she’s changed her garden several times, sometimes to change things up and other times out of necessity.
“The big trees came down and I took the hosta out,” she explained.
The Ponder house 18130 Dolphin Lake Drive has been a stunner for years. It won a blue ribbon in 2015. The beautification award presented Thursday was the fourth for the family.
Russell Ponder confessed that it’s his wife, Anita Ponder, and her son, Scott Chambers, who are the gardeners of the family. The house was decked out in geraniums, impatiens, bird of paradise, hibiscus and Boston fern. Chambers watered sometimes twice a day to make certain the plants survived during the dry summer.
