Weather helped Coyote Run Golf Course record its longest season in 2017

The Homewood-Flossmoor Park District’s Coyote Run Golf Course in Flossmoor had its longest season on record — 310 days.

Dave Ward, superintendent of golf, reported to the park board that the unseasonably mild winter allowed the park district to open the course Feb. 17, 2017, the earliest opening day in its history. The season, that officially closed Dec. 24, was the longest golf season at the course.

During the 2017 season the course recorded 31,793 rounds played, the second highest record for the course. The 2017 golf season numbers also helped Coyote Run mark the third year in a row that the course recorded more than 31,000 rounds in a season, according to Tom Denklau, course manager. The record was set in 2016 season with 32,028 rounds.

Denklau reported 46.2 percent of the rounds were played by non-residents and 18.2 percent by residents. He said 5.8 percent of the rounds were played during outings. The remainder 29.9 percent were discounted plays. Denklau said he couldn’t determine whether those golfers were in- or out-of-district.

Denklau lauded the work of Ward and his crew reporting to board members that the grounds team “continues to provide a product that gets rave reviews from our guests.”

At the January board meeting, park commissioners agreed with Denklau’s proposal to raise golf rates by $1.

An 18-hole round of golf from the expected opening of March 9 through May 11 will be $26 for residents and $31 for nonresidents golfing Monday through Friday or $31 for residents and $41 for nonresidents Saturday and Sunday.

Summer rates from May 12 through Sept. 24 for an 18-hole round will be $28 for residents and $38 for nonresidents Monday through Friday, or $38 for residents and $48 for nonresidents Saturday and Sunday.

Winter rates starting Sept. 25 will drop a weekday 18-hole round of golf to $21 for residents and $25 for nonresidents, and the Saturday and Sunday rate is $24 for residents and $28 for nonresidents.

There are no fee increases for carts or golf lessons. Coyote Run also has special rates for mid-day rounds, super twilight, 9-hole and senior/junior play.

Ward reported that the Coyote Run grounds staff is repairing and refurbishing benches, ball washers, tee balls, signs and other equipment during the winter months.

Wiley’s Grill at the course clubhouse is operating on winter hours serving from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
