The Parish of St. Joseph in Homewood brought a sense of summer into a gloomy January night with its annual Winter Picnic fundraiser on Saturday, Jan. 28.
The school gym and classrooms were filled with people dressed in tropical print shirts, shorts and T-shirts as they got into the spirit of the event.
Even Pope Francis ― via a life-sized cardboard cutout of the pontiff ― greeted guests from the shade of a decorative palm tree.
The event included all the usual summer picnic food and activities, with games for kids, a cake walk, bingo and live music.
Silent auctions and raffles might not be common picnic features, but the many donated items in the auction and a raffle with a $5,000 prize Saturday night helped raise money to support the parish’s ministries.
