For the seventh straight year, Homewood and Flossmoor residents can recycle their holiday trees at the Irons Oaks Environmental Learning Center, Western Avenue at Vollmer Road.

Trees can be dropped off between Dec. 26 and Jan. 18 at the center. Trees must be completely free of ornaments, tinsel, tags and plastic.

Volunteers will staff a special tree recycling effort from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Jan. 7, at the center’s Vollmer Road parking lot. Volunteers will remove trees from vehicles and add them to a growing pile of holiday foliage. Refreshments will be available and a fire will help keep guests warm.

Holiday lights are also being collected for recycling. Lights can be dropped off anytime through Wednesday, Jan. 18, at Flossmoor Village Hall, H-F Ice Arena, H-F Racquet & Fitness Club, Irons Oaks, Irwin Community Center and Wiley’s Grill.

Jennifer Molski, who founded the program with her husband, Tony Manos, said during the 2016 holiday season the recycling initiative collected about 700 trees. She estimates to date the recycling project has collected more than 3,500 trees that otherwise would have headed for a landfill. The trees become mulch and are used at various H-F Park District facilities.

Additional information on the program is at www.hfchristmastreerecycling.org.
