Christmas is all about a child who arrives to save the world from itself.

It is an old story, and perhaps the best. It carries a message of hope for all of us.

We are all flawed humans. But inside each one of us, there is something profound we feel when we hear these words:

Peace on earth. Goodwill toward all.

Is it possible? Is there a chance of goodwill and peace in a world where it seems to be in such short supply?

Christmas tells us that there is hope.

Today, we gather with the people who mean the most to us and do our best to express our love for each other. That’s at the heart of the gift-giving, the big dinner, the sometimes unrealistic expectations that come one day each year.

As flawed humans we sometimes fall short of the mark. But we still have the capacity to love, and that is the greatest gift of all. Love allows us to keep trying, to not give up, to continue our attempts to make the world a better place.

For the past two years, the Homewood-Flossmoor Chronicle has been telling the stories of our friends and neighbors who are making a difference. On Christmas Day, we’d like to extend our best wishes to all of you, and hope that your lives are filled with peace and goodwill.

Merry Christmas from the Chronicle staff!
