For the sixth straight year, Homewood and Flossmoor residents can recycle their holiday trees at Irons Oaks Environmental Learning Center.

Saturday, Jan. 2, has been set as the 2016 Community Christmas Tree_drop-off date. Between 9 a.m. and noon, volunteers in the Irons Oaks parking lot will remove trees from vehicles and add them to a giant pile of holiday foliage. Refreshments and a warm fire are available for persons who want to take in the atmosphere of a post-holiday celebration.

The Irons Oaks parking lot is located on Vollmer Road just west of Western Avenue.

Trees can also be dropped off at Irons Oaks at any time between Dec. 26 and Jan. 18.

Pick-ups are available for elderly or disabled persons who are unable to bring their trees to Irons Oaks. Persons interested in a pick-up must call 312-804-0496 or contact [email protected].

Last year, the recycling initiative collected about 700 trees, said Jennifer Molski, who founded the program with her husband, Tony Manos. In the first five years of the program, about 2,700 trees that otherwise would have headed for the landfill have been recycled.

The Community Christmas Tree program is sponsored by a number of local residents, businesses and organizations, including the Homewood-Flossmoor Park District and the villages of Homewood and Flossmoor. Mulch from ground-up trees is used at park district facilities.

Holiday lights are also being recycled as part of the program. Lights can be dropped off through Jan. 18 at Flossmoor Village Hall, the H-F Ice Arena, H-F Racquet & Fitness Club, Irons Oaks, the Irwin Community Center and Wiley’s Grill.

More information on the program is available at www.hfchristmastreerecycling.com.
