A Gary man stopped for speeding on 183rd Street in Homewood early Friday, Dec. 11, faces several traffic, drug and weapons charges, according to Homewood police.
Giovonte Barnes, 21, of the 2100 block of Carolina, was stopped shortly after 12:30 a.m. in the 1600 block of 183rd Street for allegedly traveling more than 60 mph in a 30 mph zone.
Police said they discovered a .45 caliber handgun in the vehicle after they noticed a firearm magazine on the passenger side. The magazine was loaded with .45 caliber ammunition, according to the report.
Barnes admitted he had consumed alcohol and marijuana, and 1.7 grams of marijuana was discovered when he removed items from his pockets, according to police.
Barnes was charged with misdemeanor unlawful use of a weapon, illegal possession of ammunition, possession of cannabis, driving under the influence, driving with a suspended license, speeding, failure to provide proof of insurance and illegal transportation of alcohol by a driver.
Barnes was released from custody Saturday, Dec. 12, after posting a $5,000 bond.
